Hyman Kadet Naturalization

This from the National Archive in Manhattan. Chaim Kadetsky changed his name to Hyman Kadet. He was born in Biezun on January 15, 1890 and arrived on October 15, 1910 on the SS Amerika to the port of NY. He married Clara on May 26, 1918. He had 2 kids: Harry (b. 4/4/1919) and Elsie (b.9/7/1922). He resided at 451 Sheperd Ave. in Brooklyn, NY. Granted citizen ship on January 28, 1943. Witnesses: Henry Kadet (unknown relation) who lived at 248 E. 51st St. Brooklyn, NY and Max Eisenberg (Henry's B.I.L. name was Max Eisenberg) who lived 205 Atkins Ave. Brooklyn NY.

Note:
(Abraham Kadetsky/Adolph Kadet b. 10/14/1883, son of Tzvi Yehuda lived at the same residence in April 1928 as per his naturalization. Hyman Kadet's grandfather's name was Tzvi Aryeh. Hyman's son, Harry Kadet's hebrew name was Tzvi Yehuda. Relationship is uncertain.)

Another Treasure - the Abraham Joseph Kadetsky Family portrait

Thanks to Stephen Morris, grandson of Louis Kadetsky for providing the picture; Linda Kadetsky Levine and Isabelle Kadetsky Paul who identified them all for us,  

In the picture, in the centre, Shifra (Celia) and her husband, and around them, assumedly oldest to youngest, back to front - Isaac, Jacob (Jake), Louis, Benjamin, Flora (Mrs. Benjamin Spellman), Charles, Morris, Isidor/Irving.

The newspaper article already shown on the blog probably used this same picture as the clothes are the same. So maybe we can assume it was taken for their 50th Anniversary, December 24, 1929.  However, two sons, Irving and Benjamin, died in 1917 and 1919, so either they are not in this picture or it was taken previous to their demises (what I suspect is  the latter). 

If anyone wishes to place exact names to exact faces, please let us know... 

A KADETSKY treasure has been found!!!

These are the sort of treasures that thrill genealogists to the marrow!

And not only this article, our newly found long-lost cousin Steve has provided many more documents ! I'll be uploading slowly. Thanks so much for sharing, and for contacting us, Steve!

Indirect relatives - The Books

Etta's father Arthur Book married Dora Hymoff Cohen, bringing his children Etta, Gertrude and Joseph, from his previous marriage into the family. Ed and Etta were very close friends all their lives and they lived nearby when Ed lived in Yonkers and we met frequently I visited Etta in Florida last in 1992. Her two children are great and now have children of their own.

Dora had first been married to Max Cohen, with whom she had three children, one of whom is still with us. I coincided with Melvin and Sidney and his wife Tammy at several family gatherings in the 70's but haven't found any pictures of them yet.


These pictures were taken at the Bohm's home in Hartsdale NY, cerca 1975.
After taking a look at those old pictures and saying "OH MY !!!!, Matt Bohm sent me these much more recent pictures of himself and his family and gave me permission to tell you who they are: Matt and his wife Jill, daughter Hally and son Zach.

Sarah Ross Hymoff Rosenberg

My great-Aunt Sarah was born in Boston on April 6, 1904 (above is her original birth record in the Boston Archives) and died in 2000. She married Sam Rosenberg and they had two sons. Sarah and my mother shared a great interest for health and nutrition and were both pioneers in organic food and were great friends until 1982, when Sarah visited us here on the Canary Islands and saw how ill my mother was yet refused to stop smoking. It was not as friendly a visit as it should have been and I know both of them were saddened by it. Sarah remained in excellent health and lived to the ripe age of 96! I did remain in contact with Sarah and with Sam too, until they died and know how fond my father was of them both.

A cousin recently sent me this picture with the people identified. They are the cousins on the Hymoff side: back row left to right: Melvin Cohen and his wife Edna; Eddie Hymoff; Bobbie Schildmeier and his wife Nettie; Sarah Hymoff's son; Adeline Schildmeier Bagget and her husband Charles; front row, left to right: Charlotte's son; Dora's daughter; the newlyweds (Gustave's daughter and her husband) ; Sara's son; Tammy and Sidney Cohen. Except for one of Charlotte's sons, all the Hymoff descendents are present in this picture.

A Family Celebration

I've been told this was a Bar Mitzvah gathering. It was around 1945, soon after my grandfather Gustave had died (which is why Nanny Gert looks so sad. She is in front there on the right). My father was in the army.

Mystery wedding picture IDENTIFIED!

Among lots of other wedding and Bar/Bat Mitzvah pictures, that my father had, there is this one, and we have not been able to discover who the happy couple are. If you can identify them, please let us know. I know who they are NOT.... as other pictures have slowly been"claimed" by the descendents of the people pictured, but this one is still unidentified!

Linda Kadetsky Levine identified his couple for us:  her grandparents Isaac Kadetsky and his bride Annie Rich AKA Bloom who married on February 1, 1901.

The fact that my father had this picture, indicates to me that the Kadetksy and Hymoff families were in contact at least until then, probably until Adeline (Isaac's aunt and my great grandmother) died in 1918.  

The Hymoff siblings

The Hymoff sisters, Dora, Charlotte, Sara and Grace and half-brother Si Waters - at their late brother Gustave's daughter's wedding in 1950. Si died in September that year, so this is possibly the last picture of him.

These are the children of Adeline (Hadel Esther) KADETSKY WATERS HYMOFF and Israel HYMOFF.

Adeline KADETSKY / WATERS / HYMOFF

My great grandmother Adeline (Esther Hadel) KADETSKY was born in 1866 in Poland, we think in or near the town of Biezun in Plock Gubernia, as it seems that is where all Kadetskies originated. She emigrated to the US with her brother Abraham and his wife Shifra, Scillia or Celia, in 1879 and they lived first in NY and later in Boston.

According to Adeline and Abraham's gravestones, their father was named R'Yitchak Yehoshua.  We have no further information on  him to date.

Adeline married a man surnamed Joseph WASSERZUG and in 1885 had a son called Simon, known as SI WATERS or HYMOFF depending on the sources. She later divorced her husband and in 1889 or 1890 married my great-grandfather Israel HYMOFF. They married in a civil ceremony in 1903, I assume because she still had to finalise her civil divorce . They had five surviving children: Dora (b. 1891) , Gustave (b. 1895), Grace (b. 1898), Charlotte (b. 1903) , Sara (b. 1904), and the Boston vital records bureau has records for other Hymoffs, a baby girl who died in 1897 aged 7 months called Lena, and Rachel born in 1894 for whom no further records have been found to date but we know she didn't survive.

The civil marriage between Adeline and Israel took place in April 1903 (see above marriage record). In 1910 Israel is recorded in the census as being an imate of Rutland State Sanatorium in Massachusetts and Adeline and her children living on Magnolia Street in Boston (see census record on later post) . It gives her maiden name as Zettock, but nowhere else does that name appear, so we will just keep looking for documents. 

Adeline died on Christmas Day in the Flu Epidemic of 1918 leaving her children in the care of her oldest daughter Dora. Simon helped the family out financially, reportedly having inherited a considerable fortune from his biological father.  

Finding information on her has been quite a chore: Adeline's daughters were sad that they did not know where their mother was buried and could not visit her grave, however, we were able to find it, when we least expected to.

Adeline's brother Abraham and his wife had an extensive family and after several years of trying I was finally able to find some of his great-grandchildren and take up contact with them. We are now exchanging information and I am happy to have reconnected the family, which over the generations grew apart. We might set up a reunion one of these days, if we can agree on where on earth to do it!
