Who is Hyman Kadetsky and where did he go?

Over the snowday on Tuesday January 27, 2015, the misforcast "Snowmagedon" I came across an unknown Hyman Kadetsky living in Chicago. I have only uncovered hints of him but no census records for him and his family. The first hint of his existence is a death certificate for his son, Arthur Kadet on https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9V-7X6F. From this record we learn that a Hyman Kadetsky was married to Ruth Lent. They had a son, Arthur Kadet who was born October 17, 1926 in Illinois and died April 17, 1979 in Chicago Illinois. Arthur married Marilyn Hoffman. He was buried at the Westlawn Jewish Cemetery in Chicago. On the death certificate is a M. Bradbury.
The second record of Hyman's existence comes from his wife's death certificate, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9J-V1S2 . Ruth Kadetsky nee Lent died on January 4, 1976 and was buried on January 6 at the Westlawn Cemetery. Her parents names were Wolf Lent and Tzivia Karneson. She was a widow. She was born December 27, 1900 in Poland. Named on her death certificate is Arthur Kadet.
I have a strong suspicion that this Hyman Kadetsky is in fact the son of Abraham Kadetsky and Necca Karniszyn of Everett, Massachusetts. They had a son Hyman Kadetsky, born February 28, 1891 in Biezun, Poland. On the 1920 Census he lived with his parents in Everett Massachusetts but then all traces all him disappeared. Until now? Did he marry and move to Chicago. Was his wife a relative through his mother's family (Karneson vs Karniszyn)? Jacob Kadetsky and Pauline Baruth 1876 marriage record reveals new information!

I found this interesting marriage record for Pauline Baruth and Jacob Kadetsky. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6QG-TYK
Although they don't have the original scan there are several interesting facts that we can learn from the record. First, this is their September 3, 1876 marriage record. From Jacob's 1906 death record we know that his parents were Gerturde Lazinsky and Elias Kadetsky (my gggggf through Jacob's brother Shaya Aziel!). This is the earliest American record I have confirmed for my Kadetsky family. Second we see that Jacob's father's name in americanized to Ignatz from Elias and his mother to Lina (her hebrew name was Gitel Leah). In the record Lina has the surname of Jackson. We already know that her surname is Lazinsky from the original polish records. This is an example of a patronymic naming as her father's first name was Jacob, hence Jacobson. For those who are descended from Jacob and Pauline Kadetsky, we learn Pauline's parents names of Meyer and Sarah Baruth. Finally we see early spellings of Kadetsky as Kadetzky and Kardetzky, as well as early spelling of Baruth as Bakuth (or poor transcriptions...)

Pauline Kadetsky (wife of Jacob Kadetsky b. 1851) Obituary

She seems like she was a really sweet lady. We see from the article that all her daughters had married by this time. I knew about the marriages of everyone except Martha Kadetsky marriage to Harry Cooper. Jacob and Pauline had 7 daughter and one son. The son Abraham died when he was 1 year old. There 7 daughter were Augusta married Samuel DeHaan, Fannie married Harry Porcelain, Rosa married Abraham Kalish, Annette married Henry Bowman, Tena married Benjamin Finkelstein, Martha married Harry Cooper, and Edna died on April 3, 1919 at 20 years old.

Isaac Kadetsky (b. 1879) was a trouble maker....BIG TIME!

I have found 2 fascinating articles with accounts of Isaac Kadetsky's troublemaking that included stealing a gun at 8 years old and going on a trip with a friend at 12 years old. Isaac Kadetsky was the firstborn son of Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Celia (Shifra) Kaufman of Boston, MA. Louis Kadetsky married Sophia Sherman, November 7, 1906

Here we have the wedding announcement of Louis,  the third son of Abraham Joseph 1879 and Shifra Kaufman to Sophia Sherman.  A name that has not yet been placed in the Kadetsky tree appears - Rebecca Kadetsky.  Is she Jake's wife or a newcomer to our research - having a "Miss" in front of her name, seems like she is a "newcomer".

Samuel Kadetsky weds Jennie Peretsky on Feb 6, 1906

Ths Samuel is almost certainly the son of Isaac 1871 and Dora Frye.    The best man was probably his brother.

Jake Kadetsky marries Rebecca Wallockstein Aug 23, 1905

Here we have Jake Kadetsky (second son of Abraham Joseph 1879 and Schifra Kaufrman Kadetsky) and Rebecca Wallockstein's wedding announcement, probably from the Jewish Advocate. On August 23, 1905 they got married and, here comes the fun part, the Kadetsky Ushers were:


Louis (Jake's brother) (Steve's gf)

Charles (there was a brother by that name too)

Samuel (there was no brother by that name so he must be a cousin. Isaac 1871 had a son called Samuel so that is most likely he, confirming the family relationship, whatever it might be)

Harry Soule, Sussman Kadetsky son in law, newpaper bio

Harry Soule, furrier and ladies tailor, is a progressive and enter prising business man of Johnstown. He was born in Poland, Jan. 12, 1875, and is the son of Abraham and Tena (Fluster) Soule.
Abraham Soule came to this country from Poland at an early date and settled in St. Louis, Mo., where he engaged in the shoe business for a number of years. He is now retired. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Soule : Harry, the subject of this sketch ; Sarah, lives in Poland ; Nathan, a tailor, lives in St. Louis, Mo.; Max, a merchant, lives in St. Louis, Mo. ; and Yetta, at home.
In March, 1892, Harry Soule came to the United States. He spent eight years in Boston, Mass., and later lived in Albany, N. Y., and New York City, where he engaged in the tailoring business. He has conducted his present business in Johnstown since 1911, and before that time was associated with George K. Kline, merchant. Mr. Soule has an extensive business and is reliable in his work.
On Aug. 17, 1902, Mr. Soule was married to Miss Anna Kadetsky, of New York City. They have four children, as follows : Jacob Brown, associated in business with his father; Nellie, a student in New York University ; Sidney and Herbert Henry, both at home. Mr. Soule is a Republican and holds membership in the Beth Zion Temple of Johnstown.

WASSERZUG- WATERS

Si Waters and his Hymoff sisters, Dora, Grace, Charlotte and Sarah, at a family wedding in 1950.

Adeline (Hadel Esther) KADETSKY married a man named WASSERZUG in the US and later divorced him. They had a son, Simon, born in 1885, who is called "Simon Hymoff" in some census records. He later changed the name to WATERS. Adeline soon after married Israel Hymoff and they had five surviving children, the four ladies in the picture above and my grandfather Gustave.

We have been unable to find Simon's father's first name anywhere. I hope a visit to the Archives might turn it up, or even yield the marriage information of Adeline and Mr. Wasserzug.

- 1910 Census: "Technology Chambers - 8 Livingston Street" Boston"Simon Waters was in Boston in the 1910 Census. He was 23 in 1910, born abt 1886, single, lodger, wool salesman. He was born in Massachusetts, but his mother and father were born in Poland/Russ/Yiddish. " (info sent me by a helpful fellow genner) .

1930 census:

Simon Waters (aged 43) was living on number 9, Rawson (Sp?) Road with his wife, Minna Coles (aged 39 and born in Pennsylvania of Russian parents), his son Richard N (age 7) and his daughter Esther (Waters Bovarnick) ( age 4.5) and their servant Margaret Kelly, aged 29.


I'd like to develop this line a little further and hope the Waters family will contribute pictures and more information...

The 1890 census was destroyed in a fire, so we will never know what it said.

Israel arrived in the United States in 1890 and is a naturalized citizen. His parents were born in Russia. Adaline arrived in 1879. Her parents were born in Poland (Russia).

His parents were both born in Germany. Israel arrived in the United States in 1887 and is a naturalized citizen. He speaks English. His occupation is listed as “Merchant”

The remaining "HYMASS" family was found as follows:
191 Magnolia Street, Suffolk County: Israel Hymas or Hymov, aged 47, Adeline, aged 46, Gustave, son aged 15, Dora, daughter aged 17, Grace, aged 11, Lottie age 8 and Sarah age 6.

Max Cohen (male born about 1884 in Ohio) is living with his wife Dora (female born about 1893 in Massachusetts). They have three children: Sydney (male born about 1915 in Massachusetts), Melvin (male born about 1917 in Massachusetts), and Selma B. (female born about 1919 in Massachusetts). The entire Cohen family is listed as being Jewish. Max’s occupation is listed as “Cutter” in store.

Also living with Max and his family are:

· His father-in-law, Israel Hymoff (male born about 1868 in Russia). Israel is listed as a widower and is listed as being Jewish. Both of his parents are listed as being born in Russia. Israel’s occupation is listed as “Florist” in a florist store.

They have two children: Edward (male born about 1924 in Massachusetts) and P**** (female born about 1929 in Massachusetts). Gertrude’s native tongue is listed as Yiddish and she arrived in the United States in 1906. She is a naturalized citizen. Gustave’s occupation is listed as “Florist.” The family owns a radio.

The 1940 census will be made public in 2012, meanwhile.....

Many details in the census information are incorrect - this can be due to sloppy filling out by the census taker, bad English communication skills by the informant, mistaken interpretation by the person introducing the data into the indexing system, or any other factor. And his grandchildren tell us that Israel tended to tell everyone different things about his origins, so we will never know if he was listed as "German" at Rutland by a mistaken staff member or if he himself made it up, maybe stating that where he was from was at the time actually Germany and no longer Poland.....   Borders did shift a lot back then!

1910 census HYMOFF

In the 1910 census, the Hymoff family (recorded as the "Hymass" family) was living at 191 Magnolia Street in Suffolk County, MA. They were: Israel, Adeline, Gustave (the son first although he was not the oldest!) Dora, Grace, Lottie (Charlotte) and Sarah. It took me some time to find them and am extremely grateful to the helpful Genner who found the record and scanned it for us!

Sarah Ross Hymoff Rosenberg

My great-Aunt Sarah was born in Boston on April 6, 1904 (above is her original birth record in the Boston Archives) and died in 2000. She married Sam Rosenberg and they had two sons. Sarah and my mother shared a great interest for health and nutrition and were both pioneers in organic food and were great friends until 1982, when Sarah visited us here on the Canary Islands and saw how ill my mother was yet refused to stop smoking. It was not as friendly a visit as it should have been and I know both of them were saddened by it. Sarah remained in excellent health and lived to the ripe age of 96! I did remain in contact with Sarah and with Sam too, until they died and know how fond my father was of them both.

They are the cousins on the Hymoff side: back row left to right: Melvin Cohen and his wife Edna; Eddie Hymoff; Bobbie Schildmeier and his wife Nettie; Sarah Hymoff's son; Adeline Schildmeier Bagget and her husband Charles; front row, left to right: Charlotte's son; Dora's daughter; the newlyweds (Gustave's daughter and her husband) ; Sara's son; Tammy and Sidney Cohen. Except for one of Charlotte's sons, all the Hymoff descendents are present in this picture.

A Family Celebration

I've been told this was a Bar Mitzvah gathering. It was around 1945, soon after my grandfather Gustave had died (which is why Nanny Gert looks so sad. She is in front there on the right). My father was in the army.
