Post #200!!! Adeline Kadetsky's Marriage Certificate

The blog's 200th post! I never thought that there would be enough info to post 200 research posts on the Kautsky family history. But here we are. Every time I think that the research has been exhausted, some new database or newspaper is digitalized and new information is there to be discovered.

Here are the images of the marriage certificate of Adeline Kadetsky 20 yo (link to the geni tree) to Joseph Wasserzug (Waters), 39 yo. The marriage certificate is for December 7, 1884. They lived at 80 Henry Street. It was his 2nd marriage and her first marriage. Adeline's parents are listed as Isaac Yishai and Bluma Jacobs. Since they are both patronymic surnames, it seems that Isaac's father's name would be Yishai.

The surnames are a mixture of patronymic surnames and the more updated family surnames. Adeline's maiden name of Kadetsky is not mentioned. Patronymic names include Wolff, Josephs, Yishia, and Jacobs. 

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky Part 2

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's headstone and death certificate have 2 dates of death. The death certificate shows her death on March 21, 1910, while her headstone has February 22, 1910. It appears whoever commissioned the headstone had the wrong English date. 

An additional complication is that 1910 was a Jewish leap year. Since 1910 was a Jewish leap year, there were 2 months of Adar, 1 & 2. So the correct Yahrzeit for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky is March 21, 1910 is the 10th of Adar 2. 

 In the 1900 US Census (see below), she is living with her daughter Adaline Hymuth. She was born in 1832. She had 6 children, 2 of whom were still alive. She is listed as married for 50 years. She arrived in 1880. 

Two more pieces of the puzzle for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky: There is a death record in Beizun for Szmul Kadecki in 1853, listing his widow as Bluma Roza Kadecki.

Isaac was born the following year. It is highly likely that Bluma Roza Kadecki married a second time. It is very common in those times for a brother to marry his brother's widow. Perhaps Bluma Roza married Yitzchak Hoshua and had Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Adeline Kadetsky. 

Additionally, in the 1910 US Census Adeline Hymoff (Waters), nee Kadetsky lived at 191 Magnolia St., next door to Bluma Rosa Kadetsky. Living next door to her elderly, 82 year old, mother would make a lot of sense (as documented on Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's death certificate. see previous post).

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky; Mother of Isaac, Adeline and Abraham Joseph Kadetsky?

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky died in Boston Massachusetts in 1910. Her headstone's inscription is very informative. Her headstone indicates that she had multiple children! Her headstone inscription is "Eemeynu" which translates as "Our Mother." If she only had one child the inscription would have been "Eemee" which means "My Mother." 

On her death certificate, her husband's name is Samuel Kadetsky. Her parents are listed as Jacob Jackson and Adeline Levy. I am unsure exactly who her children are. 

There are two Boston Kadetsky branches that are possibly her children:

1. Most likely is Isaac Kadetsky (1854-1891) whose parents on his death certificate are Samuel Kadetsky and Rosa Abrahams. 
2. Another intriguing option is Adeline Waters Hymoff nee Kadetsky. Adeline's death certificate show her parents are listed as Blumie Jackson and Isaac Kadetsky. On Adeline's headstone, her father is listed as Yitzchak Yehoshua. If Bluma Rosa Kadetsky was Adeline's mother, then Adeline would then be named for her maternal grandmother. Adeline's brother, Abraham Joseph Kadetsky's death records do not record his mother's name. 

In the 1880 US Census, Abraham Joseph Kadeska and Isac Kadezky are neighbors. A Kadezka (20 yo) was married to Shifla (21 yo). Living with him was his brother-in-law, J. Kaufman. Next door was Isac Kadezky (29 yo) with his wife Dora (21 yo) and son Samuel (10/1879).

"Our precious mother, Bluma Rosa daughter of Jacob, died 13 of Adar (I) 5670, may her soul be bound up with life. Beloved mother, Blume R. Kadetsky died Feb 22, 1910.

New info extracted from Adeline Kadetsky's marriage to Joseph Wasserzug marriage certficate!

My friend and relative through marriage, Judith Caplan, looked at Adeline Kadetsky's marriage certificate at the NYC archives. Here is what she extracted. She is a Jewish genealogy expert. The information is very confusing. Her mother and Joseph's mother had the same last name or same father's first name. Who are the witnesses H. Goldstain and Harris Wolff?

I was at the NYC Municipal Archives yesterday, and I retrieved, examined, and transcribed the Wasserzug record you were interested in from Reel #165 containing 1884 Manhattan Marriage Records 40001-41000. This is the data I saw:

I was a bit surprised that her surname was written as Wasserzug. I am not sure if her father's last name was Yishai, or they just wrote his full given name without giving his surname.
Since the bride's mother's surname was given as what looked to be Josephs, and the groom's mother's name also appeared to be Josephs, possibly they were related through their mothers....

Simon Waters; names changes, birthday irregularities, patronymic surnames and changing documentation of parents names.

Simon Waters is Adeline Kadetsky's son from her first marriage to Joseph Wasserzug. Adeline's marriage 12/7/1884 certificate to Joseph Wasserzug in Manhattan, NY indicates that her parents' names were Isaac Yishai and Bluma Jacobs. This is the earliest record of her parents and therefore is likely to most the accurate as opposed to her death certificate and gravestone which she did not supply the information for. On her marriage registration to Israel Hymoff, her parents are listed as lists parents name as Simon Zettock and Rosie Jacoboff. Her death certificate, 12/25/1918 lists her parents as Isaac Kadetsky and Bloomie Jackson. Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Adeline Hymoff's gravestones record their father's names as Yitzchak Yehoshua on Adeline's and Yitzchak Hoshaya on Abraham's. In my family there are several ealry generations with the name Shaya Aziel. There is no name in judaism of Aziel. Aziel is likely to be a bastardization of Isaac.


Simon Waters lists his parents as Adeline Kadetsky and Joseph Wassercuj on his Brazil registration cards:

On his passport application, he explains his name change and the variance of his birthday from records in an affidavit.

Rose-Marie Rosenberg - July 3, 1930 - July 23, 2009

I was deeply saddened to learn of Rose-Marie's passing and wish to pay a short tribute to her: I remember her throughout my childhood as a very dignified, elegant lady, who kept an impeccable home and whose love for her family was always visible. Whenever I was in the Boston area Rose-Marie, Bobby and I met, and kept up our relationship via correspondence and those visits that were not as frequent as I would have liked.

Her official obituary states:

"Rose-Marie ROSENBERG, Age 79, of Brookline. Entered into rest July 23, 2009. Beloved wife of Robert Rosenberg. Devoted mother of Dina and Lee. Nine members of her family perished in the Holocaust, but Rose-Marie and her sister survived by hiding in various locations. She received her Baccalaureate Degree from College Littre in France. Graveside services at Lindwood Memorial Park, 497 North Street, Randolph, MA on Sunday July 26 at 12:00 noon. Memorial observance at her late residence on Sunday only. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th floor, Brookline, MA 02445 Stanetsky Memorial Chapels

How to summarise 79 years into a short blog entry? Her life was a hard one, she survived the loss of her family and was forced to leave her homeland, she travelled to another country where she formed a family, yet I never heard her complain - more obvious was her desire to live life in love and forgiveness. She spent years fighting illness, yet did not want to show her pain or struggle. Even during her long battle with cancer, she managed to keep her cheerful spirit!

In short, I will remember her, always elegant, always beautiful, always smiling and always sharing loving looks with her husband, my cousin Bobby**, as they stood side by side, in sickness and in health, an example to us all.

Rest in peace Rose-Marie, you made this world a better place for those who knew you, despite the suffering you bore so valiantly. You will be remembered by those nearest, and by us who are far away as an example of courage in the face of adversity!! Au Revoir, Rose-Marie!

WASSERZUG- WATERS

Adeline (Hadel Esther) KADETSKY married a man named WASSERZUG in the US and later divorced him. They had a son, Simon, born in 1885, who is called "Simon Hymoff" in some census records. He later changed the name to WATERS. Adeline soon after married Israel Hymoff and they had five surviving children, the four ladies in the picture above and my grandfather Gustave.

We have been unable to find Simon's father's first name anywhere. I hope a visit to the Archives might turn it up, or even yield the marriage information of Adeline and Mr. Wasserzug.

He was born in Massachusetts, but his mother and father were born in Poland/Russ/Yiddish. " (info sent me by a helpful fellow genner) .

Simon Waters (aged 43) was living on number 9, Rawson (Sp?) Road with his wife, Minna Coles (aged 39 and born in Pennsylvania of Russian parents), his son Richard N (age 7) and his daughter Esther (Waters Bovarnick) ( age 4.5) and their servant Margaret Kelly, aged 29.


I'd like to develop this line a little further and hope the Waters family will contribute pictures and more information...

1910 census HYMOFF

In the 1910 census, the Hymoff family (recorded as the "Hymass" family) was living at 191 Magnolia Street in Suffolk County, MA. They were: Israel, Adeline, Gustave (the son first although he was not the oldest!) Dora, Grace, Lottie (Charlotte) and Sarah. It took me some time to find them and am extremely grateful to the helpful Genner who found the record and scanned it for us!

Adeline and Israel Hymoff's unsurviving children

This is the original death record of Lena Hymoff, born to Adeline and Israel Hymoff in Boston and died aged 7 months on January 6, 1897.

There was another child named Rachel who must have died as she did not reach adulthood. She is mentioned in the 1900 census as having been born in 1899. Although she could be a mistake and really be Grace Rebecca with a wrong birth date. Census are filled with errors.

A boy named Getchel is also named in the 1900 census, as having been born in Boston in 1893. Unless it is an error and it is really Gustave born in 1895, Adeline then had three children who did not survive childhood. This was unfortunately frequent back then.

Hymoff family tree

This is the Israel HYMOFF family tree, showing the descendents of Israel and Adeline, according to the information available to me right now. Please feel free to update and improve on it. Recent contact with newly found relatives will soon yield new data, meanwhile, do share your ideas with me!

As authorisations come in, I will slowly add full names and birthdate to those who wish me to. The rest will remain as they are now, unless the person her/himself requests any change.

The three names in red in the lower left side are children who died in infancy, found in the Boston Vital Records Archives. All were born to Adeline and Israel.

The Hymoff siblings

The Hymoff sisters, Dora, Charlotte, Sara and Grace and half-brother Si Waters - at their late brother Gustave's daughter's wedding in 1950. Si died in September that year, so this is possibly the last picture of him.

We just found (Pesach 2010) this gravestone at Ohavey Sedek cemetery in West Roxbury, MA, the same cemetery where the Jacob (1817) Kadetsky family plot is - could that be another clue to our connection?   Elijah Rueben Kadetsky died in 1902 aged 4,  from head injuries.  His parents were Abraham Joseph and Celia (Shifra) Kadetsky.

Adeline KADETSKY / WATERS / HYMOFF

My great grandmother Adeline (Esther Hadel) KADETSKY was born in 1866 in Poland, we think in or near the town of Biezun in Plock Gubernia, as it seems that is where all Kadetskies originated. She emigrated to the US with her brother Abraham and his wife Shifra, Scillia or Celia, in 1879 and they lived first in NY and later in Boston.

According to Adeline and Abraham's gravestones, their father was named R'Yitchak Yehoshua.  We have no further information on  him to date.

Adeline married a man surnamed Joseph WASSERZUG and in 1885 had a son called Simon, known as SI WATERS or HYMOFF depending on the sources. She later divorced her husband and in 1889 or 1890 married my great-grandfather Israel HYMOFF. They married in a civil ceremony in 1903, I assume because she still had to finalise her civil divorce . They had five surviving children: Dora (b. 1891) , Gustave (b. 1895), Grace (b. 1898), Charlotte (b. 1903) , Sara (b. 1904), and the Boston vital records bureau has records for other Hymoffs, a baby girl who died in 1897 aged 7 months called Lena, and Rachel born in 1894 for whom no further records have been found to date but we know she didn't survive.

The civil marriage between Adeline and Israel took place in April 1903 (see above marriage record). In 1910 Israel is recorded in the census as being an imate of Rutland State Sanatorium in Massachusetts and Adeline and her children living on Magnolia Street in Boston (see census record on later post) . It gives her maiden name as Zettock, but nowhere else does that name appear, so we will just keep looking for documents. 

Adeline died on Christmas Day in the Flu Epidemic of 1918 leaving her children in the care of her oldest daughter Dora. Simon helped the family out financially, reportedly having inherited a considerable fortune from his biological father.  

Finding information on her has been quite a chore: Adeline's daughters were sad that they did not know where their mother was buried and could not visit her grave, however, we were able to find it, when we least expected to.

Adeline's brother Abraham and his wife had an extensive family and after several years of trying I was finally able to find some of his great-grandchildren and take up contact with them. We are now exchanging information and I am happy to have reconnected the family, which over the generations grew apart. We might set up a reunion one of these days, if we can agree on where on earth to do it!

Why I got into genealogy

Both of my parents kept me well informed on their family history, my mother made up a photo album of family pics for each of her children and we have copied our albums for each other (back then one couldn't scan or copy photos easily). Once I got seriously interested in genealogy I began scanning and e-mailing pictures around and getting other pictures from relatives and compiled quite a few different albums for the different lines. I'll be putting all that stuff on here as I get around to it.

But I want to start with my favourites: My father gave me a box of ancient photographs, but didn't really know who all those people were. One picture always haunted me. I wanted to know who they were and what their names were. Since my great-grandmother Tobei REDLER KRAVETSKY is a family legend (although nobody has been able to tell me exactly why...but almost all her grandchildren have a child named after her, as I also am) and there are good pictures of her and since the woman in my mystery picture is so obviously related to her, I took a good guess that those were her parents. It took five years and a cousin's visit to Odessa to finally find out the names of these two people with the sad eyes: my paternal great great grandparents,

Berko and Iosya REDLER from Kherson Gubernia in the Ukraine.

The other reason I got involved in all this is because my father always told me that I was the last of our name: that his grandfather was an orphan, his father an only son as he was, and so I was the last of the HYMOFFs, except for some relative of that name in Paris, whose connection my father did not know and who we have not been able to find yet.

Since my father was a professional historian, I assumed he had all the facts and that was that. One day I googled him, expecting to only find lots of entries for him and his work. Well , I was right about that, there were over 14.000. Five of me. And, surprise: lots of other Hymoffs!

That of course was a total shock and I began to try to find out who those other Hymoffs were! Since my great grandfather was widowered early, it could have been that he married again and had a new family, but someone would have told me about that, I hope. Or a family feud split up some brothers who never spoke to each other again... and maybe I had lots of cousins I had never met....

Fate would have it that it has been easier to trace those other Hymoffs than it has been to trace mine. So far I have been able to establish that we are not related in the 5 generations since they all emigrated to the US. My ggf Israel Hymoff claimed to be from Lublin, Poland - whereas the other Hymoffs are respectively from Minsk, Belarus; Iasi, Romania and Volhynia Oblast, Lutsk. Technically speaking, they are geographically close enough for some family connection to be possible. But we're working on finding out if that is so.

Israel Hymoff arrived in the USA in June of 1889, as he claims on his "First Papers" for US Citizenship. The other Hymoff families arrived after 1906. I've been in touch with several members of each one of those families (genealogy is great for making new friends) and we have exchanged a lot of information (and jokes).

 

Then there are alterative spellings - that is a whole other matter...

I've also had a lot of help from more experienced genealogists and would like to once again thank you all for teaching me, sharing your experience with me, getting me over rough spots, giving me tips to get information faster, translating documents from Polish and Russian and gravestones in Hebrew for me and bearing with me in this exasperating, but extremely rewarding, hobby!

Israel Hymoff married Adeline (Hadel Esther) Kadetsky Waters around 1890 (civil ceremony in 1903) which links in the Kadetskies - a large tribe that have been very helpful in providing information, although we still have not managed to link "My" Kadetskies to Gary and Mark's.
