Kadetsky to Rosenstein to Fleisher to Haskin

The Rosenstein family is another family with whom I have had trouble locating their descendants. In this case, the surname Rosenstein is a common Jewish last name, making it difficult without more detailed information to differentiate which Rosensteins are related to the Kadetsky family. Adele Kadetsky, my ggm's oldest sister, married Joseph Rosenstein. They were responsible for hosting and sponsoring 23 Kadetskys when they arrived at Ellis Island at 56 Broome Street in Manhattan. See the link here for the 103 Kadetsky ship manifest list. The Rosensteins had Bertha, Sarah, Harry and Saul. Bertha married Harry Fleisher. They both sadly died in their 40s. They had 2 kids, Helen and Irving. Helen married Samuel Haskin. Does anyone have contact information for the family?

Devoted father of Bruce Haskin and his wife Carol, and the late Anne Miller and her surviving husband Dr. Michael Miller. Dear grandfather of Rachel Conrad and her husband Erin, Joshua Haskin and his wife Sara, Benjamin Haskin and his wife Leah, and Matthew and Elyse Miller. Loving great grandfather of Aidan and Sydney Conrad and Jonah and Phinn Haskin. Services were held in New York. Bruce and Carol will be at their residence Sunday 2-6 pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445. Sam loved everyone he met and everyone he met loved him."

Interment will follow at New Montefiore Cemetery on Long Island at 1 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Inc., Edison, N.J. Shiva will be held nightly at the Miller home Sunday through Thursday, with services at 8 p.m. Mrs. Miller spent over 30 years as a physical education teacher at the Dalton School in New York City. She was the devoted wife of Michael; cherished mother of Matthew and Elyse, and was loved by her father, Sam; her brother, Bruce, as well as two nieces and three nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, Mass. 02284."

Rosenstein and Wolf Kadetzky 1905 NY Census

In the 1905 NY State Census, Joseph (43) and Adel (39) Rosenstein lived at 56 Broome Street with Bertha (18), Sarah (16) and Solly (6). Boarding with them was Adele's brother, Wolf (William) Kadetzky (20). Wolf had resided in the US for 4 years.

Bertha (Rosenstein) and Harry Fleisher Death Certificates

Below are Bertha and Harry Fliesher's death certificates. Bertha was Adele (Kadetsky) Rosenstein's oldest child. Both Bertha and Harry died in their 40s. I noticed that Adele and Joseph Rosenstein's 1930 US Census listed their grandchildren, Irving (14) and Helen (11) as living with them. Now with these death records, I see that both parents passed away shortly before the 1930 census. The 1920 census for the Fleishers lists them as living in North Carolina. The head of the household was Harry, Bertha is listed as the wife and the 2 children Irving and Helen are listed as well. Notice that the mother's maiden name on Bertha's death certificate is not Kadetsky, but there are many other records that indicate that this was Adele's daughter.

Kadetsky NYC Archives

These are my notes from a visit to the NYC Archives in 11/2009. At the time I did not realize 2 things; 1 that I would be posting these notes or 2 that any kadetskies before records before 1896 would be valuable to me. So when I was running short on time I prioritized those records that I thought would yield the most info.
I colored coordinated the records. An orange check connects to Sussman Kadetsky tree. A pink check connects to Shaya Aziel Tree. A yellow check connects to Benjamin Yosef Kadetsky tree. A blue check could connect to Shaya Aziel Kadetsky or some other family research that I was doing for other branches of my tree. The list was built based on searchs on the http://www.italiangen.org/Default.htm website.

2 other notes:
I see there is an Irving Kadetsky who died in Manhattan who is connected to Abraham Josef Kadetsky and Celia Rachel from Boston.

There are several records connected to a Jacob Kadetsky and Anna/Chane. There is a Benjamin Kadetsky and Anna that appears several times as well. Unknown relation to known Kadetskys at this time.

Ellis Island Ship Manifests

The Ellis Island free search and viewing of ship manifests has been instramental in connecting brnches of the Kadetsky tree. Although the passenger lists and cities of origin have been indexed and searchable, other important pieces of information is from whom the passenger left an to whom they were going, which included their relarionships to those people. I have used the stevenmorse.org resoucre of the Ellis Island one step gold form to search the Ellisisland.org database. I have indexed all the Kadetsky passenger manifests onto a spreadsheet that includes all possible vital information found on the manifests. Here is a spread sheet with 100+ entries. So far 50+ have been grouped into 5 families, but the connection between those five families is still not known. Feel free to add Kadetsky manifests as you find them.

Adele Rosenstein bat Shaya Aziel

Adele Kadetsky was born on Jan 18, 1870 in Poland as per her death certificate. She immigrated on Jun 5, 1896 to Ellis Island, NY. Adele died in Brooklyn, NY on Mar 18, 1937; she was 67. Buried in Washington Cemetery.
Tombstone: Aydele bat Shaya Aziel.
Death Certificate: Father was Israel Kadetsky and mother was Rose.
In 1884 when Adele was 14, she married Joseph Rosenstein, son of Zelig Rosenstein & Anna Levine, in Biezun, Poland as per Biezun PSA record search on JRI Poland. Their names are listed as Josek Rozensztejn and Udla Kadecka. Josef was born on Dec 15, 1864 in Russia. Immigrated in 1889 as per 1900 US census. Joseph died in Brooklyn, NY, on Dec 31, 1935 as per the death certificate; he was 71. Buried on Jan 2, 1936 in Washington Cemetery as per Jewishgen.org burial registry.

They had the following children:
Bertha (Beile). Born in Jul 1886 in Russia. Immigrated on Jun 5, 1896 to Ellis Island
Sarah (Sore). Born in Oct 1889 in Russia. Immigrated on Jun 5, 1896 to Ellis Island
Harry (Chame). Born in Jun 1890 in Russia. Immigrated on Jun 5, 1896 to Ellis Island, NY. Harry (Chame) died in Manhattan, on Mar 20, 1903; he was 12.
Saul (Solomon). Born in May 1899 in New York.

Ellis Island Ship Manifest:
On June 5, 1896 Hodel Rosenstein (26) arrived at Ellis Island on the Bohemia. She arrived with 3 children; Beile (9), Sore (7), and Chame (4).

Census:
Joseph (35) and Adeline (30) Rosenstein lived at 56 Broome Str. in Manhattan, NY, with children Bertha (13), Sarah (10), Harry (9), and Solomon (1). Joseph’s brother, Bernhard (37) was living with them as well. The following birthdays are listed; Joseph-5/1865, Adeline-5/1870, Bertha-7/1886, Sarah-10/1889, Harry-6/1890, Solomon-5/1899, and Bernhard 7/1862. Everyone was born in Russia except for Solomon. Joseph immigrated in 1889, Adeline immigrated in 1897 with Bertha, Sarah, and Harry and Bernhard immigrated in 1900. Joseph and Bernhard worked as tailors.
