Ellis Island Ship Manifests

The Ellis Island free search and viewing of ship manifests has been instramental in connecting brnches of the Kadetsky tree. Although the passenger lists and cities of origin have been indexed and searchable, other important pieces of information is from whom the passenger left an to whom they were going, which included their relarionships to those people. I have used the stevenmorse.org resoucre of the Ellis Island one step gold form to search the Ellisisland.org database. I have indexed all the Kadetsky passenger manifests onto a spreadsheet that includes all possible vital information found on the manifests. Here is a spread sheet with 100+ entries. So far 50+ have been grouped into 5 families, but the connection between those five families is still not known. Feel free to add Kadetsky manifests as you find them.

1901 Abraham Kadetsky

After 1901, arrivals were more frequent - did they come to join families or on their own?  Who did they leave behind?  Who came later to join them?  Who did they write letters to and who did they never see again? Abraham, age 39, arrived in New York  in 1901.  His arrival record states he was from Biezun - we begin to come closer to our origins with that detail, which none of the previous arrivals stated.

In 1905 the Kadetsky party below arrived in New York:

We find them again in the 1920 United States Federal Census

Massachusetts, Middlesex County, Everett: 145 Jefferson Avenue
Abraham KADETSKY (born about 1862 in Poland) is the head of the household. He arrived in the United States in 1901. He is married to Bessie (Karniszyn) (born about 1862 in Poland). Bessie arrived in the United States in 1905. Both of their parents are listed as being from Poland. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Junk-man in a junk shop.” Living with Abraham and Bessie are their children:

1. Arthur (male born about 1890 in Poland). Arthur arrived in the United States in 1905.
2. Hyman (male born about 1896 in Poland). Hyman arrived in the United States in 1905.

Also living with Abraham and Bessie are:

1. Abraham’s son-in-law, Samuel MUSEMAN (born about 1893 in East Russia).
2. Abraham’s daughter (wife of Samuel MUSEMAN), Ida (born about 1897 in Poland).
3. Abraham’s grandson, Jake MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts)
4. Abraham’s grandson, Arthur MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts).

KADETSKY Lookalikes and Variations

We have found lots of variations in the records: CADETSKY, KADET, KODETSKY, KADESKI (if the ending is in "a" the origna came from a woman - as in Poland a female would be known as KADESKA.

Several Kadetskies have changed their name even to KAY.  So we are also pursuing that line. 

1874 Sussman Samuel KADETSKY

Sussman was born in Poland on Mar 23, 1859. His parents were: Israel Morris Kadetsky and Sarah E Sobel.

Sussman came off the ship aged 15 in 1874.
He became a naturalized US Citizen on October 21, 1887. At that time he lived on Oliver Street.
In 1882 he married Julia Brown, who was born in NY on Jan 26, 1860
and died July 10, 1926. They are buried together at Mt.Carmel Cemetery, NY)

Their children were:

Sussman died June 1, 1942.

Isaac Kadetsky 1871

The second arrival that we have found was that of ISAAC KADETSKY who also arrived in the summer of 1871 and like Jakob, lived in NY for a while. He was reportedly 17 years old when he arrived in Castle Garden.

Isaac's father was named SAMUEL according to his burial records.

He married a lady named Dora and they had the following children:

In the 1880 NY Census, Isaac and Dora lived on Allen Street, near by Abraham Joseph (1879) Kadetsky and his family.

Isaac died young, on July 11th 1891, of pericarditis in Boston and in the 1900 census, Dora is married to a man surnamed GANS and had a few more children with him. But Isaac requested US citizenship in 1889, according to the images here of his First Papers. There is an Isaac Kadetsky in the 1885 Boston Directory as follows:

More research is required to see if it is the same man.

We need photos of gravestones and copies of Archive records in order to ascertain who is really who and how who is connected to everyone else.

The First known US KADETSKY - Jakob 1871

So far, research has shown that three KADETSKIES arrived in the US in the summer of 1871. Since we have not yet been able to confirm the exact date of arrival (maybe they shipped in together but forgot the exact date and made one up, or confused the Gregorian and the Julian calendars, or......), we'll go by age:

The oldest was JAKOB KADETSKY, according to his FIRST PAPERS (see image), which were the initial application forms for citizenship, he was born on 20 Sept 1853 and came to the US from "Russia Poland" as it was known back then.... He reportedly arrived in NY on 28 June 1871 aged 18 and lived in NY for a few years, later moving to Boston where in 1876 he requested US citizenship.
























He was married to a lady named Pauline E Baruch who was born around 1854, arrived in US 1872? and died 14/09/1930 and they had the following children:

In the 1885 Boston Directory he is listed as follows: Kadetsky Jacob, peddler, h. 23 Decatur

Jakob died in Massachusetts on Mar 1, 1906 and he and Pauline are both buried in buried W Roxbury, MA in Tefireth Israel Cemetery.  As far as we can see, they had no surviving sons, so their surname did not continue.  However, Pauline stated she had 7 surviving children in the 1910 census, so we might be missing a son in our data.

In the 1910 US Census for Suffolk County, Pauline is listed as living with her son-in-law Henry Porcelaine in Suffolk County, Boston: 75 Lawrence Avenue; as follows: Henry’s mother-in-law, Pauline E. KADETSKY (born about 1855 in Germany). Pauline is a widow. She has had eight children but only seven are living in the 1910 census. Her parents were from Germany and Pauline arrived in the United States in 1872. Also living with them are her daughters:
1. Henry's wife Fanny (born about 1880 in Massachusetts)
2. Henry’s sister-in-law, Nettie KADETSKY (born about 1886 in Massachusetts)
3. Henry’s sister-in-law, Lena KADETSKY (born about 1891 in Massachusetts)
4. Henry’s sister-in-law, Martha KADETSKY (born about 1893 in Massachusetts)
5. Henry’s sister-in-law, Edna KADETSKY (born about 1899 in Massachusetts).

New KADETSKY Family blog

Having recently been approached by several Kadetsky descendents, we have decided to start a new blog ONLY for that surname (and ones related to it), to share all the genealogical information we've been gathering separately.

This one will continue operating and the much same information will be available on both, but if you are a Kadetsky or descended from one, you might want to check out the other one (as it gets fleshed out - please be patient, or better yet, contribute to fill it with interesting family lore, anecdotes, heirlooms (pictures, news etc. )

It will probably be password protected but by contacting one of us, you can request an invitation and we hope you'll like it and want to participate.

Welcome to the Kadetsky Family History Blog

Our connections keep expanding and increasing, making this blog a logical progression, so that we can all share our family history and find the missing links between KADETSKIES, as we all seem to have originated in the same place (Biezun, Poland)and so are related at some point or another.

The Authors of this blog are all descendents of Kadetskies and each contributes the information gathered while researching the history of the KADETSKY family.  At the time of the creation of this blog we have identified several main branches of the surname:  one remained in Poland and we will work on that to see how we all interconnect.  Another one entered the US in 1871 and branched into diffferent areas including New York and Boston.  Then another branch entered the US in 1879 and after spending a few years in NY, settled in Boston.  Another one moved to Israel.  And then there are the ones that changed the name to Kadet, Kay, Cadetz, etc., and that need to be connected to their respective ancestors. 

Gary Lelonek will upload the information he has gathered and connect us to Israeli Kadetskies.  He is descended from Pessia Kadetsky of Biezun, Poland.

Mark Hallerman is descended from Rachel Kadetsky of Biezun, Poland, who was Pessia's sister.

Steve Morris and Jenni Hymoff share a common great-great-grandfather - R'Yitchak Yehoshua - of whom we as yet know nothing more than his name and two of his children, Abraham Joseph (Steve's great-grandfather) and Hadel Esther /Adeline (Jenni's great-grandmother) and that they came to the US in 1879 from Poland.

As we add authors and contributions we will explain who is related to who.

A new KADETSKY contact

I received the following message a few months ago and since then, an extremely information-rich  correspondence with Gary has brought about the creation of this blog!

My great grandfather Izchak Mayer Lelonek married Pessia Kadetzky daughter of Szaja and Roza Kadetzky. They lived is Sierpc, Poland. I have other info on Kadetzkys that died during the holocaust that my grandfather entered into the yad vashem database. I know that there were Kadetzkys in Israel and in America that my grandfather tried to contact when he got to America after ww2 but i do not know any more info on them.

KADETSKY family connections

I have recently been contacted by a descendent of Rachael KADETSKY from Biezun, and given family details. I've not yet been able to see any link to our Kadetskies but will keep looking. Mark, the man who e-mailed me, has been sharing his family data and I have give him ours (Abraham Joseph and Adeline's details) and hopefully we can find the missing link.

Please check this out and if there is anything that sounds familiar to you, please let me know: that is how we can follow the connections and find the generation were our families intersect.

All the Kadetskys I see in the MA area don’t seem connected to mine yet, BUT I have found a possible one: Harold M. Kadet (probably changed from Kadetsky) born Nov 27 1927 died Jan 17 2000 first lived in Brooklyn NY, but then moved and later died in Hinsdale MA:

They are buried with a lot of my other relatives (Wolman, Kadetsky, etc.) in Elmont NY at Beth David Cemetery. (I'm going to have the stones translated and upload a.s.a.p.)

My maternal grandfather, Abraham Wolman’s mother was Rachael Kadetzki (Kadetski, Kadet, etc. Not sure of the original name in Poland but I think it was Kadetzki). Rachael Kadetzki’s siblings were Moshe Aharon, Adoph and William and William’s wife was Dora.

Here’s info I have on William:
Born 1885 – Russia
Residence in US: 510 Concord Street, Bronx, NY
Was an elevator operator as per the 1920 census

I have photos of graves of Mary and Morris Kadetsky (husband and wife) and other Kadet and Kadetz graves with names and dates. The only other one I “know” about is Ely.

A year ago my niece spent a few days in the Massachusetts Archives and found the following ( I haven't put it in any order yet, but here it is anyway):

Death Certificates info:
1) Isaac Kadetsky died July 11th 1891 (born July 14th 1854) at age 38 ( i think they are a year off on the age, only a few days though) died of Pericarditis,
lived on Prince street in Boston, no info on the burial site.
Occupation: Clerk
Parents' birthplace and name: Samuel and Rosa "Abraham" ( unfortunately there was a hole in the original paper right where her name was I spent a while studying it and this the best I could make out of it).
Both from Russia

Isaac's sons:
2) Jacob Kadetsky ( number 2) Born July 16th 1883
Father: Isaac Kadetsky and mother Dora, Father's job: clerk,
Both parents born in Poland.
3) Abraham Kadetsky Born on Feb 28th 1885.
From parents Isaac and Dora Kadetsky
lived at 33 Pitts street Boston
As you will see there is a lot of repeats on the names.the 2 original Isaac and Jacob from Russia had different parents, maybe the fathers Elias and Samuel were brothers.
4) Jacob Kadetsky died on March 1rst 1906 (born Sept. 20th 1853) at age 51 ( that is what it says on the death Cert., but if the birth day is accurate then he was really 53).
He was a Pedler
Lived at 11 Payston street Boston,
Son of Elias Kadetsky from Russia and Gertrude Lashinsky born in Russia.
Below is the death certificate from a son that Jacob had:Abram Kadetsky died aug 13th 1889 at 1 year and 10 months old, Parents: Jacob and Pauline Kadetsky, Russia.
Lived at 23 Decatur street in Boston,
They are also the parents of Rosa Kadetsky, born in 1882 .

This infant is a grandson of Abraham and Schifra:
Then we have Isaac Kadetsky son of Jacob, Born on Oct 9th, died Oct 12th 1907 at 3 days of age.
Parents: Jacob Kadetsky born in NY and Mother Rebecca Wallockstein, born in Boston.

And last but not least we have Rose Kadetsky died March 21rst 1910 at 71 years old. Wife of Samuel Kadetsky from Russia-Poland. Daughter of Jacob Jackson and Adeline Levy both from Russia. This last bit is a little unclear because on Isaac's death Cert. in 1891 Rosa's last name does not match Jackson I am sure of it, as hard as it was to read the first letter was unmistakable as an "A" not doubt about it. hard to say what that is about.

correspondence relating to KADETSKY

Over the years I have been in touch with people who for some reason were connected with certain surnames. I will slowly copy some of the correspondence here in case anything rings a bell with anyone...

June 2004
"All I have for you about the KADETSKY name is that a man who may have been named Ben Kadetsky married a woman whose last name was SOBEL. They had at least one child possibly named Sam Kadetsky. Ben Kadetsky would have been born about 1840. I have no documentation. This information was given to me by an in-law of mine related to the Sobels. Family tradition says the Sobels came from Poland. I have no information about anyone in Boston. The Sobels I know of were New Yorkers. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

WASSERZUG- WATERS

Si Waters and his Hymoff sisters, Dora, Grace, Charlotte and Sarah, at a family wedding in 1950.

Adeline (Hadel Esther) KADETSKY married a man named WASSERZUG in the US and later divorced him. They had a son, Simon, born in 1885, who is called "Simon Hymoff" in some census records. He later changed the name to WATERS. Adeline soon after married Israel Hymoff and they had five surviving children, the four ladies in the picture above and my grandfather Gustave.

We have been unable to find Simon's father's first name anywhere. I hope a visit to the Archives might turn it up, or even yield the marriage information of Adeline and Mr. Wasserzug.

* Abraham’s cousin, Simon HYMOF (male born May 1885 in Russia).

- 1910 Census: "Technology Chambers - 8 Livingston Street" Boston"Simon Waters was in Boston in the 1910 Census. He was 23 in 1910, born abt 1886, single, lodger, wool salesman. He was born in Massachusetts, but his mother and father were born in Poland/Russ/Yiddish. " (info sent me by a helpful fellow genner) .

1925 Boston Business Directory:

1930 census:

Simon Waters (aged 43) was living on number 9, Rawson (Sp?) Road with his wife, Minna Coles (aged 39 and born in Pennsylvania of Russian parents), his son Richard N (age 7) and his daughter Esther (Waters Bovarnick) ( age 4.5) and their servant Margaret Kelly, aged 29.


I'd like to develop this line a little further and hope the Waters family will contribute pictures and more information...

Adeline and Israel Hymoff's unsurviving children

This is the original death record of Lena Hymoff, born to Adeline and Israel Hymoff in Boston and died aged 7 months on January 6, 1897.

There was another child named Rachel who must have died as she did not reach adulthood. She is mentioned in the 1900 census as having been born in 1899. Although she could be a mistake and really be Grace Rebecca with a wrong birth date. Census are filled with errors.

A boy named Getchel is also named in the 1900 census, as having been born in Boston in 1893. Unless it is an error and it is really Gustave born in 1895, Adeline then had three children who did not survive childhood. This was unfortunately frequent back then.
