1904 Edward Kadetsky

We have the arrival of Edward Kadetsky in 1904 aged 19 and later on he appears wih his wife Pearl in the 1920 census, living at 36 Pond Ct Worcester.  No children were listed. 

He and his wife Pearl are buried together at Worcester Hebrew Cemetery in Auburn MA

Castle Garden and Ellis Island

Both of these entry points to the US in New York operate extensive databases on Internet and one can get a lot of information from them.  

America's first immigration center CastleGarden.org is an educational project of The Battery Conservancy. This free site offers access to an extraordinary database of information on 12 million immigrants from 1820 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 100 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period.

Ellis Island operated between 01 Jan 1892  and  in 1897 a fire destroyed the facilites (and archives) closing the processing areas off until 1900 when it reopened  Operating unil the 1930's, it eventually was used only for the detention of illegal aliens. 

Both sites have been of great use to us in our search for data on our ancestors!

Brother and sister coming to join other siblings?   Benjamin J's children Ida and Hyman?  Maybe that is why he went back to Europe - to get his children?  The dates do coincide....  If Ida was 17, she would have been born around  1893 and Hyman was 19 so he was born around 1890-91, which matches his gravestone.

1901 Abraham Kadetsky

After 1901, arrivals were more frequent - did they come to join families or on their own?  Who did they leave behind?  Who came later to join them?  Who did they write letters to and who did they never see again? Abraham, age 39, arrived in New York  in 1901.  His arrival record states he was from Biezun - we begin to come closer to our origins with that detail, which none of the previous arrivals stated.

In 1905 the Kadetsky party below arrived in New York:

Abraham KADETSKY (born about 1862 in Poland) is the head of the household. He arrived in the United States in 1901. He is married to Bessie (Karniszyn) (born about 1862 in Poland). Bessie arrived in the United States in 1905. Both of their parents are listed as being from Poland. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Junk-man in a junk shop.” Living with Abraham and Bessie are their children:

1. Arthur (male born about 1890 in Poland). Arthur arrived in the United States in 1905.
2. Hyman (male born about 1896 in Poland). Hyman arrived in the United States in 1905.

Also living with Abraham and Bessie are:

1. Abraham’s son-in-law, Samuel MUSEMAN (born about 1893 in East Russia).
2. Abraham’s daughter (wife of Samuel MUSEMAN), Ida (born about 1897 in Poland).
3. Abraham’s grandson, Jake MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts)
4. Abraham’s grandson, Arthur MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts).

1879 Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and family

The next arrival recorded is the one I know the most about, as they were my ancestors.

Abraham Joseph KADETSKY, aged 24, his wife, Celia (Shifra Kaufman), aged 22 and his sister Adeline (Hadel Esther), aged 13 entered the US in New York in 1879.  They lived at 108 Allen Street in the 1880 US Census (J Kaufman, brother in Law, lived with them) and by 1885 Adeline had married a man named WASSERZUG (changed later to WATERS) and had a son with him, named Simon WATERS, born in Massachusetts.  They later divorced and by 1890 Adeline was married to Israel HYMOFF and had five children with him, Dora (Nov 12, 1892- Jun 16, 1979), Gustave (Oct 27, 1895- Feb 6, 1946), Grace (Aug 24, 1898 - Sept. 4, 1955), Charlotte (Jul 2,1902- Dec. 24, 1987) and Sarah (April 6, 1904- May 18, 2000), Gustave Hymoff was my grandfather.

Having established where I fit into the Kadetsky tree, back to Abraham Joseph (born in Poland/Russia May 1855) and Celia (born Jan 1857 in Poland/Russia).

Abraham Joseph and Adeline's father was named R'Yitchak Yehoshua, according to their gravestones. We don't yet know if there were more siblings.

Unfortunately, the 1890 census was lost in a fire so we will never have that priceless information.  We have to look at other documents such as City Directories,  BMD (Birth, Marriage and Death) records, the press, obituaries, marriage announcements, etc...

Both of their parents were born in Poland/Russia. Abraham and Scillia both arrived in the United States in 1879 and Abraham is a naturalized citizen. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Tailor (coats)”.   They have the following children:

The information above is taken from Census records, Town Directories, BMD records, and is of course subject to correction.  More reliable information can be obtained from archives and from gravestones.  If anyone is willing to do the footwork, we can then complete the picture. 

So far I have been able to contact with descendents of ISAAC KADETSKY, JAKE KADETSKY and LOUIS KADETSKY-  I thought that MORRIS had no children, however I have been told that they had a daughter named Barbara who later became Barbara Foster/Saul.  Does anybody know her?

1874 Sussman Samuel KADETSKY

Sussman was born in Poland on Mar 23, 1859. His parents were: Israel Morris Kadetsky and Sarah E Sobel.

Sussman came off the ship aged 15 in 1874.
He became a naturalized US Citizen on October 21, 1887. At that time he lived on Oliver Street.
In 1882 he married Julia Brown, who was born in NY on Jan 26, 1860
and died July 10, 1926. They are buried together at Mt.Carmel Cemetery, NY)

Israel Kadetsky 1871

The Castle Garden records show the following entry:

He arrived on the Wisconsin. Born around 1841, he was the oldest of the three that arrived that summer.  He was classed as a labourer.  

Isaac and Jacob Kadetsky also arrived that summer, but on the 28th of June and from Sweden, so it looks like they came separately. 

I have no further data on him at present.

Isaac Kadetsky 1871

The second arrival that we have found was that of ISAAC KADETSKY who also arrived in the summer of 1871 and like Jakob, lived in NY for a while. He was reportedly 17 years old when he arrived in Castle Garden.

Isaac's father was named SAMUEL according to his burial records.

He married a lady named Dora and they had the following children:

In the 1880 NY Census, Isaac and Dora lived on Allen Street, near by Abraham Joseph (1879) Kadetsky and his family.

Isaac died young, on July 11th 1891, of pericarditis in Boston and in the 1900 census, Dora is married to a man surnamed GANS and had a few more children with him. But Isaac requested US citizenship in 1889, according to the images here of his First Papers. There is an Isaac Kadetsky in the 1885 Boston Directory as follows:

More research is required to see if it is the same man.

We need photos of gravestones and copies of Archive records in order to ascertain who is really who and how who is connected to everyone else.

The First known US KADETSKY - Jakob 1871

So far, research has shown that three KADETSKIES arrived in the US in the summer of 1871. Since we have not yet been able to confirm the exact date of arrival (maybe they shipped in together but forgot the exact date and made one up, or confused the Gregorian and the Julian calendars, or......), we'll go by age:

The oldest was JAKOB KADETSKY, according to his FIRST PAPERS (see image), which were the initial application forms for citizenship, he was born on 20 Sept 1853 and came to the US from "Russia Poland" as it was known back then.... He reportedly arrived in NY on 28 June 1871 aged 18 and lived in NY for a few years, later moving to Boston where in 1876 he requested US citizenship.
























He was married to a lady named Pauline E Baruch who was born around 1854, arrived in US 1872? and died 14/09/1930 and they had the following children:

In the 1885 Boston Directory he is listed as follows: Kadetsky Jacob, peddler, h. 23 Decatur

Jakob died in Massachusetts on Mar 1, 1906 and he and Pauline are both buried in buried W Roxbury, MA in Tefireth Israel Cemetery.  As far as we can see, they had no surviving sons, so their surname did not continue.  However, Pauline stated she had 7 surviving children in the 1910 census, so we might be missing a son in our data.

In the 1910 US Census for Suffolk County, Pauline is listed as living with her son-in-law Henry Porcelaine in Suffolk County, Boston: 75 Lawrence Avenue; as follows: Henry’s mother-in-law, Pauline E. KADETSKY (born about 1855 in Germany). Pauline is a widow. She has had eight children but only seven are living in the 1910 census. Her parents were from Germany and Pauline arrived in the United States in 1872. Also living with them are her daughters:

2. Henry’s sister-in-law, Nettie KADETSKY (born about 1886 in Massachusetts)
3. Henry’s sister-in-law, Lena KADETSKY (born about 1891 in Massachusetts)
