Bluma Rosa Kadetsky Part 2

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's headstone and death certificate have 2 dates of death. The death certificate shows her death on March 21, 1910, while her headstone has February 22, 1910. It appears whoever commissioned the headstone had the wrong English date. 

An additional complication is that 1910 was a Jewish leap year. Since 1910 was a Jewish leap year, there were 2 months of Adar, 1 & 2. So the correct Yahrzeit for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky is March 21, 1910 is the 10th of Adar 2. 

 In the 1900 US Census (see below), she is living with her daughter Adaline Hymuth. She was born in 1832. She had 6 children, 2 of whom were still alive. She is listed as married for 50 years. She arrived in 1880. 

Two more pieces of the puzzle for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky: There is a death record in Beizun for Szmul Kadecki in 1853, listing his widow as Bluma Roza Kadecki.

Isaac was born the following year. It is highly likely that Bluma Roza Kadecki married a second time. It is very common in those times for a brother to marry his brother's widow. Perhaps Bluma Roza married Yitzchak Hoshua and had Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Adeline Kadetsky. 

Additionally, in the 1910 US Census Adeline Hymoff (Waters), nee Kadetsky lived at 191 Magnolia St., next door to Bluma Rosa Kadetsky. Living next door to her elderly, 82 year old, mother would make a lot of sense (as documented on Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's death certificate. see previous post).

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky; Mother of Isaac, Adeline and Abraham Joseph Kadetsky?

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky died in Boston Massachusetts in 1910. Her headstone's inscription is very informative. Her headstone indicates that she had multiple children! Her headstone inscription is "Eemeynu" which translates as "Our Mother." If she only had one child the inscription would have been "Eemee" which means "My Mother." 

On her death certificate, her husband's name is Samuel Kadetsky. Her parents are listed as Jacob Jackson and Adeline Levy. I am unsure exactly who her children are. 

There are two Boston Kadetsky branches that are possibly her children:

1. Most likely is Isaac Kadetsky (1854-1891) whose parents on his death certificate are Samuel Kadetsky and Rosa Abrahams. 
2. Another intriguing option is Adeline Waters Hymoff nee Kadetsky. Adeline's death certificate show her parents are listed as Blumie Jackson and Isaac Kadetsky. On Adeline's headstone, her father is listed as Yitzchak Yehoshua. If Bluma Rosa Kadetsky was Adeline's mother, then Adeline would then be named for her maternal grandmother. Adeline's brother, Abraham Joseph Kadetsky's death records do not record his mother's name. 

In the 1880 US Census, Abraham Joseph Kadeska and Isac Kadezky are neighbors. A Kadezka (20 yo) was married to Shifla (21 yo). Living with him was his brother-in-law, J. Kaufman. Next door was Isac Kadezky (29 yo) with his wife Dora (21 yo) and son Samuel (10/1879).

"Our precious mother, Bluma Rosa daughter of Jacob, died 13 of Adar (I) 5670, may her soul be bound up with life. Beloved mother, Blume R. Kadetsky died Feb 22, 1910.

Abraham Kadetzke Naturalization Papers with an assist from Marks Block

Again rummaging through Kadetsky records that I have collected over the years yields another surprise. Marks Block was the helpful uncle who coralled the wild child Isaac Kadetsky who went on an adventure from Boston to NY. See posts on Isaac's capture and escapades. I found another connection. He was the witness on Abraham Kadetzke's naturalization in Oct 18, 1884. Abraham Kadetzke was living at 67 Eldridge St in NYC. Marks Block was living at 23 Rutgers Place.

Who is Isaac Kadetsky's uncle Marks Block?

Who is uncle Marks Block of 158 Rivington Street in Manhattan? Great uncle he is getting his nephew arrested! The kid had alot of gall to accuse the cop of stealing his money. I'm sure the parents were very "relieved" that the chutz-pah-dick child was located :).

Isaac Kadetsky (b. 1879) was a trouble maker....BIG TIME!

I have found 2 fascinating articles with accounts of Isaac Kadetsky's troublemaking that included stealing a gun at 8 years old and going on a trip with a friend at 12 years old. Isaac Kadetsky was the firstborn son of Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Celia (Shifra) Kaufman of Boston, MA. Kadetsky Memorial Service held April 17, 1921

Israel/Isidor Kadetsky, seventh son of Abraham Joseph 1879 and Shifra Kaufman, died April 17, 1917 aged 25 and just two years later their fourth son Benjamin H Kadetsky died on April 28, 1919, aged 33. 

The gravestone tells us that Benjamin was married and had children - we have yet to find out who they were.  His marriage record states that Benjamin H. married Ida Kesselman on Feb, 15, 1908 in Boston.  At the time she lived at 32 Poplar Street and he at 4 Fayston street.   Both streets show up in other family records.   Benjamin's profession is given as a Leather Cutter.   His father being a Tailor, possibly they were in business together?

Louis Kadetsky married Sophia Sherman, November 7, 1906

Here we have the wedding announcement of Louis,  the third son of Abraham Joseph 1879 and Shifra Kaufman to Sophia Sherman.  A name that has not yet been placed in the Kadetsky tree appears - Rebecca Kadetsky.  Is she Jake's wife or a newcomer to our research - having a "Miss" in front of her name, seems like she is a "newcomer".

Jake Kadetsky marries Rebecca Wallockstein Aug 23, 1905

Here we have Jake Kadetsky (second son of Abraham Joseph 1879 and Schifra Kaufrman Kadetsky) and Rebecca Wallockstein's wedding announcement, probably from the Jewish Advocate. On August 23, 1905 they got married and, here comes the fun part, the Kadetsky Ushers were:


Louis (Jake's brother) (Steve's gf)

Benjamin (Jake's brother)

Charles (there was a brother by that name too)

Samuel (there was no brother by that name so he must be a cousin. Isaac 1871 had a son called Samuel so that is most likely he, confirming the family relationship, whatever it might be)

Edward (Isaac 1871 also had a son by that name so we reconfirm the family ties.... )

Jack Kadetsky ((Isaac 1871 also had a son by that name so we again reconfirm the family ties.... )

B. Kadetsky (probably Isaac 1871's son Benjamin)

Another Treasure - the Abraham Joseph Kadetsky Family portrait

Thanks to Stephen Morris, grandson of Louis Kadetsky for providing the picture; Linda Kadetsky Levine and Isabelle Kadetsky Paul who identified them all for us,  

In the picture, in the centre, Shifra (Celia) and her husband, and around them, assumedly oldest to youngest, back to front - Isaac, Jacob (Jake), Louis, Benjamin, Flora (Mrs. Benjamin Spellman), Charles, Morris, Isidor/Irving.

The newspaper article already shown on the blog probably used this same picture as the clothes are the same. So maybe we can assume it was taken for their 50th Anniversary, December 24, 1929.  However, two sons, Irving and Benjamin, died in 1917 and 1919, so either they are not in this picture or it was taken previous to their demises (what I suspect is  the latter). 

If anyone wishes to place exact names to exact faces, please let us know...

1879 Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and family

The next arrival recorded is the one I know the most about, as they were my ancestors.

Abraham Joseph KADETSKY, aged 24, his wife, Celia (Shifra Kaufman), aged 22 and his sister Adeline (Hadel Esther), aged 13 entered the US in New York in 1879.  They lived at 108 Allen Street in the 1880 US Census (J Kaufman, brother in Law, lived with them) and by 1885 Adeline had married a man named WASSERZUG (changed later to WATERS) and had a son with him, named Simon WATERS, born in Massachusetts.  They later divorced and by 1890 Adeline was married to Israel HYMOFF and had five children with him, Dora (Nov 12, 1892- Jun 16, 1979), Gustave (Oct 27, 1895- Feb 6, 1946), Grace (Aug 24, 1898 - Sept. 4, 1955), Charlotte (Jul 2,1902- Dec. 24, 1987) and Sarah (April 6, 1904- May 18, 2000), Gustave Hymoff was my grandfather.

Having established where I fit into the Kadetsky tree, back to Abraham Joseph (born in Poland/Russia May 1855) and Celia (born Jan 1857 in Poland/Russia).

Abraham Joseph and Adeline's father was named R'Yitchak Yehoshua, according to their gravestones. We don't yet know if there were more siblings.

Unfortunately, the 1890 census was lost in a fire so we will never have that priceless information.  We have to look at other documents such as City Directories,  BMD (Birth, Marriage and Death) records, the press, obituaries, marriage announcements, etc...   

In the 1900 census, the Abraham Joseph Kadetskies were living in Boston:

Abraham KADETSKY (born May 1855 in Poland/Russia) is the head of the household. He is married to Scillia/Celia/Schifra (born January 1857 in Poland/Russia). They were married in approximately 1879. Both of their parents were born in Poland/Russia. Abraham and Scillia both arrived in the United States in 1879 and Abraham is a naturalized citizen. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Tailor (coats)”.   They have the following children:

1. Isaac (male born October 1879 in New York)
2. Jacob (male born June 1881 in New York)
3. Louis (male born February 1884 in New York)
4. Benjamin (male born May 1885 in New York)
5. Flora (female born February 1888 in Massachusetts)

Morris is missing here - which led me up a wrong path searching for who he was!

The information above is taken from Census records, Town Directories, BMD records, and is of course subject to correction.  More reliable information can be obtained from archives and from gravestones.  If anyone is willing to do the footwork, we can then complete the picture. 

So far I have been able to contact with descendents of ISAAC KADETSKY, JAKE KADETSKY and LOUIS KADETSKY-  I thought that MORRIS had no children, however I have been told that they had a daughter named Barbara who later became Barbara Foster/Saul.  Does anybody know her?

They are the cousins on the Hymoff side: back row left to right: Melvin Cohen and his wife Edna; Eddie Hymoff; Bobbie Schildmeier and his wife Nettie; Sarah Hymoff's son; Adeline Schildmeier Bagget and her husband Charles; front row, left to right: Charlotte's son; Dora's daughter; the newlyweds (Gustave's daughter and her husband) ; Sara's son; Tammy and Sidney Cohen. Except for one of Charlotte's sons, all the Hymoff descendents are present in this picture.

We just found (Pesach 2010) this gravestone at Ohavey Sedek cemetery in West Roxbury, MA, the same cemetery where the Jacob (1817) Kadetsky family plot is - could that be another clue to our connection?   Elijah Rueben Kadetsky died in 1902 aged 4,  from head injuries.  His parents were Abraham Joseph and Celia (Shifra) Kadetsky.
