Benjamin Kadetsky Opens Hebrew School and is President of Congregation Ahavath Scholem in Buffalo, NY

Benjamin Kadetsky, brother of Sussman Kadetsky was an active member of the Buffalo Jewish Community. He was a well-known successful businessman, running a tailoring service. He served as president of Congregation Ahavath Scholem and the local Hebrew school.

He was president of the "Shabbat School" as reported by the Buffalo Times on September 3, 1909. The school would serve 400 kids. The curriculum would cover "lectures, history, Hebrew, and English."

The following is found in the google book search from the "Bulletin By American Newspaper Publishers Association" Dated 1904 GLASGOW WOOLEN, MILLS, Buffalo, N. Y. The above is conducted by Benjamin Kadetsky. He is a married man about 46 years old, and has been in business at the present location since December last, at that time succeeding the Isham Taylor Company. On interviewing the above he stated that he is doing a prosperous business and is meeting all obligations promptly. He has two stores in Buffalo and one factory which was his former tailor shop. He also has a store in Akron, Ohio. He declines to give any information further than this. Locally, he is regarded as a man of good reputation and ability.

Herman Kadetsky's family mystery grows.....Part 2

Google is amazing. I was researching a Kadetsky branch and google brought me back to my own post on this blog for the answer. I originally posted about Herman Kadetsky's family remarking about multiple wives, multiple Charles, a missing son and a new one and the consistent Rose Sherer. (http://kadetskyfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2013/10/herman-kadetskys-family-mystery.html) Herman was a brother of Sussman Kadetsky from the Israel MOshe Kadecki family tree.

Through the Pennsylvania Ancestry Archives I found the 1948 death certificate for Hyman Kadetsky. It lists his wife as Jennie Fried. His first wife, Hinda Kadetsky nee Neufeld, had died 2 years earlier in 1946. So it is evident that Jennie Fried was Hyman's second wife. Hence her obit lists Charles, Jacob and Rose Sherer as her children.

The second part of our mystery centers around the son, Jacob Kadetsky. Hyman and Hinda had four children, Abraham who died as a child, Charles (who I don't have much info about), Moses (who totally disappears by the 1940's Census), and Rose who marries Leonard Sherer owner of Sherer Oil Company. It turns out that Moses' high school yearbook in 1919 lists his nickname as "Jack" and his college yearbook from Penn State University in 1922 lists his name as Jacob Moses Kadetsky. A search on familysearch.org shows that Jacob Kadetsky of Cambria, PA has the same birthdate as Moses Kadetsky of Cambria, PA.

Looking back at the 1940 Census for Herman's family, I have a strong suspicion that the census taker or the person supplying the information to them made a mistake. Instead of Charles and Jacob being brothers to Herman Kadetsky, they were likely his sons, Charles and Jacob. They both were not married at that point (they may have never married). Just goes to show that the census could be misleading.....

Regarding Sherer Oil Company, you can read about it here http://www.sfc1959.com/files/CE_SHERER_S.doc It was located in South Fork PA. The writer describes the business dating back to around 1920. I like it when genealogy really becomes a story of family and local history. Its not much Kadetsky history but I have included it here since Rose Kadetsky Leonard Sherer who is described in the sketch.

Sierpc Yizkor Book Translation Complete!!!!

I received the following email from Sandra Kirsch, regarding the completion of the project to translate the Sierpc Yizkor Book. Sandra Kirsch and Dorothy Lipsky have been fundraising and coordinating the translation. Sierpc's history is important to me as my grandfather, Charles Lelonek was born in Sierpc. The Israel Moshe Kadetsky family line lists Sierpc as there city of origin. Charles Lelonek's mother Pesa Kadecki was originally from Biezun before she married Yitzchak Meyer Lelonek of Sierpc and moved to Sierpc. Her brother, Yechezkel Kadecki also moved to Sierpc and he and his family perished in the Holocaust. Charles Lelonek was one of the 5 editors for the first edition of the Sierpc Yizkor Book in 1948, Zaml-Bukh Fun Sherptser Sheyres Hakhurbn, published in the US Zone in Germany. Later Ephraim Talmi (Wluka) expanded the Yizkor book and published a second edition in 1959 in Israel. That Yizkor Book's translation is now completed and available online. There will be an opportunity to buy a hard copy of the book and I will share details when they become available. The book offers a complete perspective on the typical lives of our ancestors in the 200 years leading up to Holocaust and the immigration to America, Israel and Argentina.

Herman Kadetsky's family mystery grows.....multiple Charles Kadetskys, multiple mothers but one sister Rose?

I found the following obituary while searching for info on the Cambria, Johnstown Penn family. It brings up many questions about Herman and Hinda Kadetsky's family in Cambria. According to their Ellis Island manifests, Herman was Sussman Kadetsky's brother.

I don't know who this Jennie Fried Kadetsky is. It seems that she was married to a man with last name Fried and had 4 sons, Jack, George, Harold and Joseph. It is unclear how she is the mother of Jacob and Charles Kadetsky and Rose Sherer.

There is an obit for Charles Kadetsky that lists his parents as Hyman & Hilda (Neufeld) Kadetsky (brother of Sussman Kadetsky from the Israel MOshe Kadecki family tree) and survived by his sister as Rose Sherer. http://www.camgenpa.com/obit/scans/_prgs/obDetl.php?recd=29518

What really confuses me is that in the 1910 US Census; Hyaim (34) [AKA Herman] and Hinde (34) Kadetsky lived in Cambria, Pennsylvania on Market Street. Living at home at the time was Abraham (13), Charles (11), Moses (9) and Rose (2). Everyone was born in Russia/Germany aside from Rose who was born in Penn. Hyaim worked as tailor is in clothing store.

Then in the 1940 US Census we find the following information regarding Herman's family; Herman had 2 brothers living with him at the time. Charles, 58 in 1940 (b. 1882) and Jacob 48 in 1940 (b.1892) are living with Herman in addition to his wife and daughter Rosa. I have found no other documentation of these “brothers” to this point.

There is a Jacob Kadetsky who is buried in Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown PA, the same cemetery as Herman, Hinda, Charles and Abraham. Abram died in 1913 at approx 15 yo, Herman died 9/23/1948 and Hinda died 8/25/1946.

How is this family all tied together? HMMMMMMM............

Ira Kaye, son of Irving Kadetsky, grandson of Sussman Kadetsky Interview!

I just found an incredible interview of Ira Kaye (Kadetsky) a grandson of Sussman Kadetsky, great grandson of Israel Moshe Kadetsky branch. The interview is something of a genealogist dream interview as he describes how his family came to America and how they lived. He even talks how his grandmother's family (not the Kadetsky side) was involved in the Civil War! I found the interview of Ira Kaye, after I found out from this death announcement that he had changed his name from Kadetsky to Kaye. Here is the death announcement for his father in the Sumter Daily Event on May 6, 1963:
“Sumter Attorney Loses Father; Service Today
Graveside services were to be held in New York City today for Irving Kadetsky, father of Ira Kaye, Sumter attorney.
Kadetsky, who made his home with his son here for the past year, died Sunday morning at Toumey Hospital after a brief illness.
Surviving in addition to his son are a daughter, Mrs. Martin Schwartz of Long Island, and five grandchildren.
The body was sent from Hurst Funeral Home to I. Weil and Sons in New York City for the services.”

Perla Berk of Buffalo

Ancestry.com has indexed the 1892, 1915 and 1925 New York State Census. In the 1915 NY Census, Aaron Kadetsky (23 yo), a tailor, was a nephew to the head of the household, Morris Berk (47 yo). Morris Berk was a tailor. Living with Morris was his wife, Pearl (47 yo) and children; Abraham (19 yo), Isadore (15 yo) and Arthur (7 yo).

In the Sierpc JRI poland results there is a marriage record for Perla Kadecka and Moszek Berk in 1888.

Since Aaron Kadetsky is identified as a nephew, Perla would be the daughter of Israel Moshe Kadecki and a sister to Abram, Sussman, Friedman, Chaim and Benjamin Kadetsky.

Menashe (Max) Kadetsky and Berko (Benjamin) Kadetsky

I have been mystified about the connection between Benjamin Kadetsky b. 1870 who lived in Buffalo, NY and other Kadetsky who lived there including Friedman Kadetsky b.1862, Chaia (b. 1878) and Gersz (b.1877) Grabkowitz/Gary, and Max Kadet (b. 1883/1880). Over the weekend I was looking at Ancestry's immigration records and came across the Ellis Island Manifest for Menashe Kadetsky who arrived 1/2/1904 on the St. Louis and joined his Uncle Berko Kadetsky at 259 Main St. in Buffalo, NY. According to multiple business records that can be found doing a google search using keywords Kadetsky Buffalo NY, it is documented that Benjamin B. Kadetsky owned a tailoring company at that address. Jenni Hymoff had documented this manifest years ago, I have just rediscovered it now. This is the first document that connects Benjamin Kadetsky to anyone but his immediate family! I have not yet found a record to indicate exactly who Menashe Kadetsky is, but there is a Max Kadet, the brother of Chaia Grabkowitz, Mendel Kadet, Benjamin (a different Benjamin from the subject of this post), and Aaron Kadet who lived in Buffalo as well. (Much info about this family can be found by searching for the surname Kadet on findagrave.com) I have never found his Ellis Island manifest, but I strongly believe that Max Kadet and Menashe Kadetsky are the same person due to proximity of birth years and that in the 1930 census Max Kadet is listed as immigrated in 1903. Based on this relationship, Benjamin Kadetsky is the brother of Friedman Kadetsky and Sussman Kadetsky among others including Abram Icek Kadecki, Perla Kadetsky, and Hyman (Chaim) Kadetsky. Retrospectively, I see that when Chaya Grabkovitz immigrated she stayed at at Hersz Grabkowitz at 257 Main Str in Buffalo, the address of Benjamin Kadetsky's business.

He served as the synagogue president in Buffalo for congregation Ahavath Scholem.

Here is Benjamin Kadetsky's Ellis Island manifest from 11/30/1886, that lists his home town as Sierpc. According to Benjamin Kadetsky's passport application from 1910 his was bron in Shirtz, Poland and immigrated on 11/1885.

Israel Moshe Kadetsky Tree

This is a tree for Israel Moshe Kadetsky of Sierpc, Poland/Russia and his children, Abram, Sussman, Friedman and Chaim Kadetsky. Abram as far as I can tell stayed in Sierpc, Poland. His children lived in Buffalo and then moved to Chicago. Sussman and his family lived in Manhattan. Friedman and his children lived in Buffalo and Chicago, Il. Chaim and his family lived in PA.

Shades of Gray (Grakowitz)

Hey this is interesting stuff. So I was thinking about this Helen/Chaya Gray who is Abram Kadecki's daughter, Israel Moshe Kadecki's granddaughter. A couple of yrs ago I ordered some records from the Sierpc PSA through JRI and I received a marriage record for a Chaia Kadecki to Gersz Grabkowitz. Maybe they Americanized Grabkowitz to Gray. Right? I was interested in this record before because Chaskel Kadecki, Shaya Aziel Kadecki's son (my ggm's brother) married Gersz Grabkowitz's sister. Chaskel and his family were killed in the Holocaust.

Anyway, so I checked the translation for the marriage certificate and Chaya's father's name is Abram Icek Kadecki. Then I checked the Ellis Island database to see if the Grabkowitz family came to America. Sure enough Hersz Grabkowitz came to America and stayed by his Uncle (in-law) Sussman Kadetsky, at 709 Columbus ave in Manhattan. A yr later Chaya Grabkowitz and her 2 daughters left her father Abram Kadecki in Sierpc and joined her husband Hersz Grabkowitz in Buffalo, NY. Finally in Mandel Kadet's Chicago tribune obit it lists Helen Gray as his sister. Also when Aaron Kadet came to America he left his father Abram Kadet and joined his sister, Chaya Gray! Tada..meet the the Grays! Cool!

Sussman Kadetsky (45yo) 1905 Census at 709 Columbus Ave. Living at home were his wife Julia (44yo),Anna (22yo), Benjamin (20yo), Isaac (18yo), Bella (16yo), and Charles (14yo). Also living with them were Harry Soule (32yo) and Jacob (2yo).

Chaim Kadezky 1904 ship manifest

On November 16, 1904, Chaim Kadezky (35 yo and single) arrived at Ellis Island on the Oscar 2. He last resided in Russia. He joined his brother S. Kadetsky living at 709 Columbus Ave, NY.
At that time Sussman Kadetsky lived at 709 Columbus Ave. He lived there from at least 1900 through the 1920s. Sussman's relatinship to the other NY or MA Kadetsky is still unknown. But his siblings his nephews and sister in law all lived in sierpc where Pessia (Kadetsky) Lelonek and Chaskiel Kadetsky lived from 1900 until WW2. So maybe the connection of the families lies in Sierpc. Anyone know?

Sussman Kadetsky lived at 709 Columbus in the 1900 census through the 1920s when his kids married. Sussman Kadetsky's relationship to the other NY and MA Kadetskys is unknown.

Mendel Kadecki had come for Sierpc on 12/18/1905 and resided with his Uncle Sam Kadecki living at 709 Columbus Ave. In the 1900 US Census Sussman/Shmuel Kadetsky lived at 709 Columbus Ave.
Sussman's relationship to other NY or MA Kadetsky's is still unknown.

Heinde Kodetsky Ship Manifest, Sussman Kadetsky's sister-in-law

This is the Ellis Island ship manifest for Hinde Kodetsky and her children.

On May 22, 1907, S. Kadetsky’s sister in law, Heinde Kodetsky (32 yo), arrived at Ellis Island on the Niew Amsterdam. Her last residence was Zajeps, Russia/Poland. She left her husband and traveled with her children Abram (10 yo), Isadek? (8 yo) and Morsch (6 yo). They joined their brother-in-law/uncle S. Kodetsky at 709 Columbus Ave, NY.

Sussman Kadetsky lived at 709 Columbus Ave in the 1900 Census and was living there when he kids got married in the 1910's and 1920's as per his children's marriage records in the NYC Archives. I do not have any other records for Hinde or children and I do not know who her husband was. Many of the Sussman's siblings came from Sierpc, Poland in the early 1900s and I know my Kadetsky's moved to Sierpc from Biezun around the early 1900s, so there is hope that some record will be found connecting the families.

Harry Soule, furrier and ladies tailor, is a progressive and enter prising business man of Johnstown. He was born in Poland, Jan. 12, 1875, and is the son of Abraham and Tena (Fluster) Soule.
Abraham Soule came to this country from Poland at an early date and settled in St. Louis, Mo., where he engaged in the shoe business for a number of years. He is now retired. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Soule : Harry, the subject of this sketch ; Sarah, lives in Poland ; Nathan, a tailor, lives in St. Louis, Mo.; Max, a merchant, lives in St. Louis, Mo. ; and Yetta, at home.
In March, 1892, Harry Soule came to the United States. He spent eight years in Boston, Mass., and later lived in Albany, N. Y., and New York City, where he engaged in the tailoring business. He has conducted his present business in Johnstown since 1911, and before that time was associated with George K. Kline, merchant. Mr. Soule has an extensive business and is reliable in his work.
On Aug. 17, 1902, Mr. Soule was married to Miss Anna Kadetsky, of New York City. They have four children, as follows : Jacob Brown, associated in business with his father; Nellie, a student in New York University ; Sidney and Herbert Henry, both at home. Mr. Soule is a Republican and holds membership in the Beth Zion Temple of Johnstown.

In 1882 when Sussman Shmuel (Alexander) was 22, he married Julia (Gitel) Brown, daughter of Jacob Brown & Hannah Cohn. Born on Jan 24, 1860 in New York. Julia (Gitel) died on Jul 10, 1926; she was 66. Buried on Jul 12, 1926 in Mt Carmel, LI. Alias/AKA: Ahuva.

They had the following children:

i. Anna. Born in Oct 1883 in Manhattan, New York. Anna died on Sep 17, 1957; she was 73. Buried in Mt Carmel, LI.

On Aug 17, 1902 when Anna was 18, she married Harry Soule, son of Abraham Moses Soule & Nattie Fluster, in Manhattan, NY. Harry died on Jan 10, 1960. Buried in Mt Carmel, LI.

ii. Bernard B. (Benjamin). Born in Jun 1885 in Manhattan, NY. Bernard B. (Benjamin) died on Nov 17, 1971; he was 86. Buried in Mt Carmel.

iii. Irving Isaac (Yitzchak). Born on May 20, 1887 in Manhattan, NY. Irving Isaac (Yitzchak) died on May 5, 1963; he was 75. Buried in Mt Carmel, LI.

On Jul 21, 1914 when Irving Isaac (Yitzchak) was 27, he married Sophie (Saska) Mate, daughter of Selig (Oshyia Zelig) Mate & Esther Weiss, in Manhattan, NY. Born on Aug 5, 1894. Sophie (Saska) died on Jun 10, 1960; she was 65. Buried in Mt Carmel, LI.
