Kadetsky to Rosenstein to Fleisher to Haskin

The Rosenstein family is another family with whom I have had trouble locating their descendants. In this case, the surname Rosenstein is a common Jewish last name, making it difficult without more detailed information to differentiate which Rosensteins are related to the Kadetsky family. Adele Kadetsky, my ggm's oldest sister, married Joseph Rosenstein. They were responsible for hosting and sponsoring 23 Kadetskys when they arrived at Ellis Island at 56 Broome Street in Manhattan. See the link here for the 103 Kadetsky ship manifest list. The Rosensteins had Bertha, Sarah, Harry and Saul. Bertha married Harry Fleisher. They both sadly died in their 40s. They had 2 kids, Helen and Irving. Helen married Samuel Haskin. Does anyone have contact information for the family?

Here is a link to an obituary for Samuel Haskin, the husband of Helen Fleisher:

"Sam Haskin of Peabody, formerly of Manalapan, NJ, on Sept. 29, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Helen (Fleisher)Haskin. Devoted father of Bruce Haskin and his wife Carol, and the late Anne Miller and her surviving husband Dr. Michael Miller. Dear grandfather of Rachel Conrad and her husband Erin, Joshua Haskin and his wife Sara, Benjamin Haskin and his wife Leah, and Matthew and Elyse Miller. Loving great grandfather of Aidan and Sydney Conrad and Jonah and Phinn Haskin. Services were held in New York. Bruce and Carol will be at their residence Sunday 2-6 pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445. Sam loved everyone he met and everyone he met loved him."

Here is a link to the obituary for Samuel Haskin and Helen Fleisher's untimely death of their daughter Anne Haskin Miller:

"Anne Haskin Miller of Edison, N.J., died peacefully on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, in Memorial Sloan-Kettering, New York. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Congregation Neve Shalom, 250 Grove Ave., Metuchen, N.J. Interment will follow at New Montefiore Cemetery on Long Island at 1 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Inc., Edison, N.J. Shiva will be held nightly at the Miller home Sunday through Thursday, with services at 8 p.m. Mrs. Miller spent over 30 years as a physical education teacher at the Dalton School in New York City. She was the devoted wife of Michael; cherished mother of Matthew and Elyse, and was loved by her father, Sam; her brother, Bruce, as well as two nieces and three nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, Mass. 02284."

Jacob Kadetsky b.1877 immigrated in 1904 Solved!

Hey everyone out there,
I just received an email from Marcia Sidney, that has resolved a genealogical brick wall. Of all my ggm's siblings, I have never been able to track down her brother, Jacob Kadetsky's descendants. He had four daughters who changed their names upon marriage and 1 son who did not have children. I have posted about the family on this blog. Today I received an email from Marcia through this blog! She gave me an update about this family. Thank you Marcia.
I did some quick research and came upon this interesting 1940 US Census for Schwartzwald-Kadetsky in the 1940 US Census. This entry cannot be found by looking for Pearl Kadetsky since her last name was misspelled by the census recorder. Kadetsky became Pedetsky! Sarah Schwartzwald and Pearl Kadetsky are 2 of Jacob Kadetsky's daughters.

Blum/Bloom is Back!

I found another Blum connection. Benjamin Kadetsky dob 12/10/1872 applied for a social security number on February 1937. (That was the first year of the social security program). He lists his parents as Harry Kadetsky and Rebecca Blum. here is the link; http://wiz2.ancestry.com/Records/LIHP_Reg~Records/8211627c-4169-404b-aa9d-25f44ac831ff#/IndexView This most closely matches Benjamin J. Kadetsky son of Hirsch Tzvi Kadetsky and Rebecca Ruchla Chliebowak. Benjamin married Adele Cohen and had the following children; Herman, Ida (Eisenberg), Henry, and Esther (Lerner).

Sierpc Jewish Community Facebook page.

I have setup a Sierpc Jewish Community Facebook page. You can see over 90 pictures of Sierpc mostly prewar and photos that descendants have posted of their Sierpc ancestors. There are over 90 members.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/sierpcjewishcommunity/

Anyone is invited to join.

Sierpc Jewish Community is a group to crowdsource the Jewish history, customs, records and news of descendants of the town of Sierpc. The generation that lived through the Holocaust is passing and we need to share the stories of Sierpc Holocaust survivors and memorials of those murdered by the Nazis. Members are invited to share their connection to Sierpc. Sierpc had a long Jewish history leading up to the Holocaust. Under the files tab you will find the scan of an early Yizkor book, and a necrology from that book. Please feel free to share more files the Sierpc Jewish Community would find helpful. I have also created a google excel file for BMD records that I have received from Poland and entered the extracts. Feel free to add any extracts you have.

Abraham Kadetzke Naturalization Papers with an assist from Marks Block

Again rummaging through Kadetsky records that I have collected over the years yields another surprise. Marks Block was the helpful uncle who coralled the wild child Isaac Kadetsky who went on an adventure from Boston to NY. See posts on Isaac's capture and escapades. I found another connection. He was the witness on Abraham Kadetzke's naturalization in Oct 18, 1884. Abraham Kadetzke was living at 67 Eldridge St in NYC. Marks Block was living at 23 Rutgers Place.

Here is page 1 of the naturalization:

Herman Kadetsky's family mystery grows.....Part 2

Google is amazing. I was researching a Kadetsky branch and google brought me back to my own post on this blog for the answer. I originally posted about Herman Kadetsky's family remarking about multiple wives, multiple Charles, a missing son and a new one and the consistent Rose Sherer. (http://kadetskyfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2013/10/herman-kadetskys-family-mystery.html) Herman was a brother of Sussman Kadetsky from the Israel MOshe Kadecki family tree.

Through the Pennsylvania Ancestry Archives I found the 1948 death certificate for Hyman Kadetsky. It lists his wife as Jennie Fried. His first wife, Hinda Kadetsky nee Neufeld, had died 2 years earlier in 1946. So it is evident that Jennie Fried was Hyman's second wife. Hence her obit lists Charles, Jacob and Rose Sherer as her children.

The second part of our mystery centers around the son, Jacob Kadetsky. Hyman and Hinda had four children, Abraham who died as a child, Charles (who I don't have much info about), Moses (who totally disappears by the 1940's Census), and Rose who marries Leonard Sherer owner of Sherer Oil Company. It turns out that Moses' high school yearbook in 1919 lists his nickname as "Jack" and his college yearbook from Penn State University in 1922 lists his name as Jacob Moses Kadetsky. A search on familysearch.org shows that Jacob Kadetsky of Cambria, PA has the same birthdate as Moses Kadetsky of Cambria, PA.

Looking back at the 1940 Census for Herman's family, I have a strong suspicion that the census taker or the person supplying the information to them made a mistake. Instead of Charles and Jacob being brothers to Herman Kadetsky, they were likely his sons, Charles and Jacob. They both were not married at that point (they may have never married). Just goes to show that the census could be misleading.....

Regarding Sherer Oil Company, you can read about it here http://www.sfc1959.com/files/CE_SHERER_S.doc It was located in South Fork PA. The writer describes the business dating back to around 1920. I like it when genealogy really becomes a story of family and local history. Its not much Kadetsky history but I have included it here since Rose Kadetsky Leonard Sherer who is described in the sketch.

Shades of Gray (Grakowitz) Part 2; Helen Gray Death Certificate

Funny how a search for Abraham Kadetsky in Chicago on family search turns up new records on dead ends. Helen Gray's parents were Abraham and Shana Kadetsky. Abraham was Sussman Kadetsky's brother. Helen married Hersz Grabkovitz. They changed their name to Gray after coming to America from Sierpc, Poland. (see http://kadetskyfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2011/06/shades-of-gray-grakowitz.html) They immigrated to Buffalo to Benjamin Kadetsky before moving west to Chicago. After the Holocaust they bought a page in the Sierpc Yizkor gathering. Hersz was Americanized to Harry. Harry and Helen had three children; Thressa, Rena and Marvin. I have been unable to trace the family beyond that. I just found Helen's death certificate. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QVRN-WFYY She died December 27, 1957 and was buried at the West Lawn Cemetery in Chicago on December 29, 1957. She last lived at 3114 Jerome Avenue. Her parents are listed as Abraham and Shaina Kadetsky. The informant was Laura Felles. Anyone know how to find Helen and Harry Gray's children.

Hyman Kadetsky Reappears!

I don't understand why I can't find something when I look for it directly, but find it instead when searching for a different individual. Huh? I just don't get it. Anyway, I wanted to know more about Hyman's father, Abraham Kadetsky and searched for him and Hyman's death record pops up as the first search result on familysearch.com. Here is a link to the record, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVRN-7TCQ This record shows that the Hyman Kadetsky in Chicago was Abraham Kadetsky and Pesa Karneson's son. He died on October 13, 1957 and is listed as 60 years old. His birth records from Biezun indicate that he was born January 29, 1889 and would be 68 years old. I don't know who the informant, Rosemary Wells is. Hyman lived at 5335 N California Avenue, which is the same address that is listed on Ruth Kadetsky's death certificate. Ta-Da. Hyman Kadetsky has reappeared!

Who is Hyman Kadetsky and where did he go?

Over the snowday on Tuesday January 27, 2015, the misforcast "Snowmagedon" I came across an unknown Hyman Kadetsky living in Chicago. I have only uncovered hints of him but no census records for him and his family. The first hint of his existence is a death certificate for his son, Arthur Kadet on https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9V-7X6F. From this record we learn that a Hyman Kadetsky was married to Ruth Lent. They had a son, Arthur Kadet who was born October 17, 1926 in Illinois and died April 17, 1979 in Chicago Illinois. Arthur married Marilyn Hoffman. He was buried at the Westlawn Jewish Cemetery in Chicago. On the death certificate is a M. Bradbury.
The second record of Hyman's existence comes from his wife's death certificate, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9J-V1S2 . Ruth Kadetsky nee Lent died on January 4, 1976 and was buried on January 6 at the Westlawn Cemetery. Her parents names were Wolf Lent and Tzivia Karneson. She was a widow. She was born December 27, 1900 in Poland. Named on her death certificate is Arthur Kadet.
I have a strong suspicion that this Hyman Kadetsky is in fact the son of Abraham Kadetsky and Necca Karniszyn of Everett, Massachusetts. They had a son Hyman Kadetsky, born February 28, 1891 in Biezun, Poland. On the 1920 Census he lived with his parents in Everett Massachusetts but then all traces all him disappeared. Until now? Did he marry and move to Chicago. Was his wife a relative through his mother's family (Karneson vs Karniszyn)? Here is his World War 1 draft registration card. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-25977-7654-53?cc=1968530

Jacob Kadetsky and Pauline Baruth 1876 marriage record reveals new information!

HI Everyone, Happy Snowday for Northeastoners!
I found this interesting marriage record for Pauline Baruth and Jacob Kadetsky. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6QG-TYK
Although they don't have the original scan there are several interesting facts that we can learn from the record. First, this is their September 3, 1876 marriage record. From Jacob's 1906 death record we know that his parents were Gerturde Lazinsky and Elias Kadetsky (my gggggf through Jacob's brother Shaya Aziel!). This is the earliest American record I have confirmed for my Kadetsky family. Second we see that Jacob's father's name in americanized to Ignatz from Elias and his mother to Lina (her hebrew name was Gitel Leah). In the record Lina has the surname of Jackson. We already know that her surname is Lazinsky from the original polish records. This is an example of a patronymic naming as her father's first name was Jacob, hence Jacobson. For those who are descended from Jacob and Pauline Kadetsky, we learn Pauline's parents names of Meyer and Sarah Baruth. Finally we see early spellings of Kadetsky as Kadetzky and Kardetzky, as well as early spelling of Baruth as Bakuth (or poor transcriptions...)
