A Family Celebration

I've been told this was a Bar Mitzvah gathering. It was around 1945, soon after my grandfather Gustave had died (which is why Nanny Gert looks so sad. She is in front there on the right). My father was in the army.

Ellis Island entries for KADETSKY

These are entries of Kadetsky and similar names. If we Kadetskies are all related, then these are worth following up.

Sierpc is a town very close to Biezun and Golub Dobrzyn, and Zrjeps could be an alternative spelling. Szerpeck is in Hungary.

Abraham and Hadel Esther did not enter via Ellis Island as it did not yet exist when they came in in 1879. I have not been able to find them in Castle Garden records. We know they were in New York before moving to Boston, which was around 1880 or 81.

Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period.

There is only one Kadetsky there:

They might be listed under different spelling variations. In the 1880 census Abraham and family are listed as CADESKY.

AGNES KADESKA, GENTLEMAN'S SERVANT age 26 Female, arrived 22 Mar 1889 from GERMANY, Ship: AMERICA

Abraham J. KADETSKY (born May 1855 in Poland/Russia) is the head of the household. He is married to Shifra/Scillia/Celia (born January 1857 in Poland/Russia). They were married in approximately 1879. Both of their parents were born in Poland/Russia. Abraham and Scillia both arrived in the United States in 1878 and Abraham is a naturalized citizen. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Tailor (coats).” They have the following children (I have colour-coded them to match them to later census records):

Isaac KADETSKY (born about 1881 in New York) is the head of the household. He is married to Annie A. (born about 1883 in Russia/Yiddish). Isaac and Annie were married in about 1901. Both of their parents are listed as being born in Russia/Yiddish. By 1910, Annie had three children but only two were still living. Annie arrived in the United States in 1884. Isaac’s occupation is listed as “Collector of furniture.” Isaac and Annie have two children living with them:

I'll eventually get to organising all this better, but meanwhile, at least you can see the information.

The 1940 census will not be available to the public until 2012, so meanwhile we have other data, such as marrriage announcements, obituaries, etc. , as well as personal reporting from each family branch. If you have any to add, please scan as a jpg and e-mail to the address above.

other Kadetsky census and records information

From several years' census records we have the following KADETSKY information that needs to be collated into a tree. They are not descendents of Abraham Josef nor do I yet know their exact relationship to us: maybe Samuel KADETSKY from Poland was related to our gggf R'Yitchak Yehoshua. Thanks to Celine who spent hours wading through records at the Records Bureau in Boston (her notes are included as they clarify some things) :

Death Certificates info:
1) Isaac Kadetsky died July 11th 1891 (born July 14th 1854) at age 38, died of Pericarditis, lived on Prince street in Boston, no info on the burial site. Occupation: Clerk. Parents' birthplace and name: Samuel and Rosa "Abraham" ( unfortunately there was a hole in the original paper right where her name was: I spent a while studying it and this the best I could make out of it). Both from Russia
Isaac's sons:
2) Jacob Kadetsky ( number 2) Born July 16th 1883 (Father: Isaac Kadetsky and mother Dora), Father's job: clerk, both parents born in Poland.
3) Abraham Kadetsky, Born on Feb 28th 1885 (From parents Isaac and Dora Kadetsky) lived at 33 Pitts street Boston.
As you will see there are a lot of repeated names.
The 2 original Isaac and Jacob from Russia had different parents, maybe the fathers Elias and Samuel were brothers.

4) Jacob Kadetsky died on March 1rst 1906 (born Sept. 20th 1853) at age 51 ( that is what it says on the death Cert., but if the birth day is accurate then he was really 53). He was a Peddler. Lived at 11 Payston street Boston. Son of Elias Kadetsky from Russia and Gertrude Lashinsky born in Russia. Below is the death certificate from a son that Jacob had: Abram Kadetsky died Aug 13th 1889 at 1 year and 10 months old, Parents: Jacob and Pauline Kadetsky, Russia. Lived at 23 Decatur street in Boston, They are also the parents of Rosa Kadetsky, born in 1882.

1910: Massachusetts, Suffolk County, Boston: 75 Lawrence Avenue
Henry A. PORCELENO? (born about 1880 in Massachusetts) is the head of the household. He is married to Fr?? (born about 1880 in Massachusetts). They have been married since about 1906. Henry’s parents were born in Holland/Dutch and Fr??’s parents were born in Russia/Yiddish. They had one child who died before the 1910 census. Henry’s occupation is listed as a “Cigar maker in a factory.” Living with Henry and Fr?? is:

1. Henry’s mother-in-law, Pauline KADETSKY (born about 1855 in Germany). Pauline is a widow. She has had eight children but only seven are living in the 1910 census. Her parents were from Germany and Pauline arrived in the United States in 1872.
2. Henry’s sister-in-law, Naettia KADETSKY (born about 1886 in Massachusetts)
3. Henry’s sister-in-law, Lena KADETSKY (born about 1891 in Massachusetts)
4. Henry’s sister-in-law, Martha KADETSKY (born about 1893 in Massachusetts)
5. Henry’s sister-in-law, Edna KADETSKY (born about 1899 in Massachusetts).

1920 United States Federal Census: Massachusetts, Middlesex County, Everett: 145 Jefferson Avenue
Abraham KADETSKY (born about 1862 in Poland) is the head of the household. He arrived in the United States in 1901. He is married to Bessie (born about 1862 in Poland). Bessie arrived in the United States in 1905. Both of their parents are listed as being from Poland. Abraham’s occupation is listed as “Junk-man in a junk shop.” Living with Abraham and Bessie are their children:
1. Arthur (male born about 1890 in Poland). Arthur arrived in the United States in 1905.
2. Hyman (male born about 1896 in Poland). Hyman arrived in the United States in 1904.
Also living with Abraham and Bessie are:
1. Abraham’s son-in-law, Samuel MUSEMAN (born about 1893 in East Russia).
2. Abraham’s daughter (wife of Samuel MUSEMAN), Ida (born about 1897 in Poland).
3. Abraham’s grandson, Jake MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts)
4. Abraham’s grandson, Arthur MUSEMAN (born about 1919 in Massachusetts).

1920 Massachusetts, Worcester County, Clinton: 36 Pond Court
Edward KADETSKY (born about 1885 in Poland) is the head of the household. He arrived in the United States in 1904. He is married to Pearl (born about 1893 in Russia). Pearl also arrived in the United States in 1904.

It might be much easier to find those born in Poland if we had their Hebrew names, as that is most likely how they were recorded in the Polish archives.

BTW, many times when it states a person was born in "Russia"; they mean Poland as for many years, Poland belonged to Russia.

KADETSKY surname in Poland

Thanks to Wlodek Malinowsky, we have a list of towns in whose archives the Surname KADECKI (in English KADETSKY) can be found. JRI Poland has a very good search system that you can go through if you want the exact details, however, after reading through the lists, I find nothing resembling our known ancestors, Abraham Josef and Hadel Esther and their father R'Yitchak Yehoshua.

Here is a map where all the towns mentioned are marked. I'd been meaning to put this up for a long time but finally have got around to it, since Wlodek kindly sent the lists along and I hope it is as interesting to you as it is to me.

The towns where we've found Kadecki listings are (keep in mind that OUR direct Kadetsky ancestors all emigrated before 1880):

Biezun (86 entries, between 1828 and 1894)
Drobin (One entry, 1837, the death record for Iciek Abramowicz KADECKI)
Golub Dobrzyn (6 entries, all after 1890)
Plock (2 entries, 1869 and 1876, a marriage - Szulim- and the death of Chana Ruchla)
Plonsk (one entry, 1892 the marriage of Chenoch KADECKI)
Warsaw (4 entries, between 1887 and 1904)
Zakroczym (20 entries between 1862 and 1897)
Zuromin (one entry: 1898 marriage of Zurech)
Ciechanow (Katacki - possible variation in spelling) (2 entries from 1841)

Mlawa: the town where other listings are recorded.
Torun: the Archives where the Biezun records are located.

We also found an entry in Zychlin, for a Wasercug. The town is close enough to indicate that the Waters family and the Kadetsky family may have known each other in Poland already. There are several Hymoffs/Chaimows in the area but that is a more common surname and thus may or may not be related to us. Lublin, where Israel Hymoff reportedly was born, is in the lower right hand corner and close enough to leave the possibility open that there is a pre-USA link.

Letter to all Relatives

Dear All,
We (Gary Lelonek, Mark Hallerman and Jenni Hymoff) have slowly been uploading a lot of the genealogical information we've been gathering in the last 10 years, to this KADETSKY family blog.

There is a lot more to be added and we am slowly working on it when we get some spare time (not easy for us, but anyway!) and we will welcome anything you wish to add. Pictures, trees, family anecdotes: all are welcome.  There is a specific address on the blog that you can use, Kadetskyfamilyhistory@gmail.com. or our personal e-mail addresses.

Several comments to you all:
We will not publish names of living persons without their express consent, nor pictures that are less than 25 years old, IF there are living people on it (this is accepted genealogical practice), without the express consent of the people pictured. This means YOU!!! If you do not give us (Gary or myself) your consent, your entry (and that of your children and grandchildren unless they separately authorise us to) will give only birth year and gender: in other words: "female, born 1958" (see attached examples). If you want us to state anything different, please feel free to tell us! No geographical information will be given for living persons either, nor will anything like Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers or any other contact info for anyone but us EVER, unless you expressly authorise us to publish yours.

We would also greatly appreciate your feedback on the site: all comments are welcome, especially if you correct wrong information. This blog is for all of us, to collect the information for all, in one place and after a few weeks awaiting your collective and individual replies, We will adapt the family trees and upload it with names and birth dates appropriately deleted where need be. Spouses' names will not be included without authorisation unless both are deceased. Anything uploaded can be downloaded, so if you wish something to be changed, let us know. Reasonable requests will be honoured. And if you are not on it yet, you will be as soon as we get to your branch!   We'd also love to hear from anyone not previously contacted, to fill in gaps and get to know you!
Any family member requesting it will be able to get via e-mail or post, the "real" tree (complete with who is who) and copies of pictures or documents. I'm very slow at answering postal requests, but will eventually get to you!  Gary is much better at it, but please be patient as we are both employed and this is a hobby..... 
You may refer others (preferably family) to this site but we will only be sharing it amongst us, the family (extended, but only if that person is mentioned on it, we've not gone as far as to add cousins of cousins). We can eventually set up a password to access it, if you want, but the general idea is for it to be accessible to all so that we can gather the most infomation and relatives.   You are also welcome to copy pictures or trees for your personal use, or we can send better resolution ones via e-mail.
