Marks Block, the uncle who "caused the arrest" of his 12 yo nephew Isaac Kadetsky

Isaac Kadetsky (10/16/1880-1/11/1944) often encountered trouble in his early years. In 1888, at 8 years old, he led a group of two other children his age, managed to acquire a pistol, and tried to break into a safe. (see post and 1888 and 1892 article). In 1897, they were busted for playing poker by the "Gigantic Sergeant - Big Rufe." They were out for the night and told police that they had "jollied de old man and were goin' to just have a little game- see." (See post and 1897 article)

Here is the volley recorded in the 1888 article between the boys, who were 6-8 years old, and the police.

Police: "Where did you put the revolver? 

Moses Silva (7 years old): "Don't 'member. I frew it down in a cellar. No, I didn't take dose postage stamps. He took 'em." 

Eddie Bougusch (6 years old): "I didn't neever. Ikey took 'em." 

Isaac Kadetsky (8 years old): "No, I didn't. 'oo (you) took 'em, ooself." 

The article goes on to say that "Mrs. (Shifra) Kadetsky brought in the revolver that her child had taken home. She handed it over to the Captain., the hammer at full cock, and the chambers all loaded. The young Kadetsky has been arrested before and is evidently the leader of the two. " 

When he was 12 years old in December 1892, his friend Moses Goldman took $300 from his parents and shared $100 with Isaac. The two then ran away to New York. After spending a week "on the run” in the city, Isaac ran into his uncle, Marks Block, a tailor residing at 158 Rivington Street. Marks then notified the Essex Police, leading to Isaac's arrest. The Essex Police Court placed Isaac under the care of the Gerry Society. Until now, this uncle's identity has remained a mystery. 

Last night, I discovered Jacob Block's marriage license, dated September 10, 1892. He lived at 158 Rivington Street; his parents were Marx Block and Sarah Cohen. Jacob married Bessi Zitron, the daughter of Jacob Zitron and Paula Sand.

Marks' occupation is a tailor. They lived at 14 Essex (the heart of the Jewish ghetto in New York's Lower East Side) 

The following children resided with them:

1. Israel Block, 17 yo (1861/2), England 

2. Jacob Block, 12 (1867/8), England 

3. Kauffman Block, 10 yo (1870/1), England 

4. Simon Block, 7 yo (1872/3) England 

5. Morris Block, 4 (1875/6), England 

6. Henry Block 2 (1877/8) New York 

7. Robert Block 0 (b. 12/1879) New York 

The older five boys were born in England, which is consistent with Jacob's 1892 marriage certificate. The 1900 US Census shows Marks as 60 (6/1840) and Sarah Block as 60 (4/1840).

They were married for 39 years (1861). Tragically, she lists having 14 children, 5 who "remained alive," so sad. They list their immigration as 1873. His occupation is a tailor.

Szmul Kadecki (1825-1853) death certificate links to Bluma Roza Kadecki (1832-1910) and Issac Kadetsky (1851-1891)!

Jenni Hymoff Koeppel uncovered the death Poliosh death record for Szmul Kadecki. A Genner provided the following vital information extract: This is the DEATH record of Szmuel KADECKI. He died on January 25, 1853 at 5 a.m., aged 28(?), residing in Bieżuń, son of Abram Szlamowicz and Nycha. He left a widow, Blima Rojza, née GARBEL, and a son, Azryel(? possibly Israel or Azriel), aged 2. This adds more evidence to the hypotheisis that Isaac Kadetsky is the son of Szmul mentioned in this record. See my previous post Abraham Kadetsky (1885-1963) son of Isac Kadetsky Yahrzeit Plaque

Abraham Kadetsky's memorial plaque from Congregation Beth Shalom of the Bule Hills, Milton MA has been indexed and is listed on the Jewishgen Memorial Plaque database.  The following information is extracted: Avraham ben Yeshiah Ezrial, died on the 23 of Shevat 5723 (2/19/1963). Unfortunately
the original website with pictures of the plaque is no longer operating.

His brother, Samuel Kadets' (11/1/1879-2/4/1955), yahrzeit plaque in Beth Israel of Quincy, MA, lists his name as Shmuel ben Azriel Yeshaya, 12 of Shevat 5715. https://web.mit.edu/justom/Public/Erica/QuincyDisplay-to-press.pdf

Samuel and Abraham's parents were Isac Kadetsky (7/14/1854-7/11/1891) and Dora Frye (4/1861-?). These plaques show that Isac's Hebrew name was Yeshaya Azriel. Isac's cousin, Israel (Shaya Azriel) Kadetsky (my gggf) shared the same name. Based on Jewish naming custom, they were likely named after the same family member, potentially their grandmother, Nuchy Eliaszowicz's father, Azriel.

Jacob Kadetsky and Pauline Baruth Marriage Certificate, September 3, 1876 in New York City

Here is the September 3, 1876 marriage record for Jacob Kadetsky to Pauline Baruth in Manhattan. A few interesting things:

1. His name is recorded as Kardetzky. Item 6 on the second-page documents that he was born in Biezun, Poland.

2. There is an 1877 Boston Tax record for him.

3. His father, Ignatz, is Eliasz Kadecki. Jaocob's mother, Lina Jackson, is Gertrude Lina Lacinski, daughter of Jacob Lacinski.

4. Both witnesses on the back of the marriage certificate appear to have the surname Baruth. Only David Baruth appears with a different witness on the front.

Nisson Finkelstein: Apollo Space Suit Designer Oral History Interview

Nisson Finkelstein (1925-1989) was a physicist, businessman, and activist. He was the founder and former president of ILC Industries Inc., the company that designed and produced the spacesuits used in NASA’s Apollo program. He was heavily involved in the Delaware community and served as president of the Jewish Federation of Delaware.

"We made tracking systems for them with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, but I still had an idea it would be great to get involved with the very guts of this idea of walking on the moon. Which seemed to me to be a fantastic concept."

In the second tape, he discusses making all the Apollo Space suits and attending every launch. He discusses the excitement and nervousness of each launch.

David Dragon (1923-2022), Holocaust Survivor of Sieprc, Poland

David died yesterday. Here is his obituary in the Chicago Tribune.

David Dragon, 99, Holocaust survivor, beloved husband of the late Sara nee Wloch; proud father of Dr. Leon Dragon (Carol Hellman); beloved grandfather of Deborah Dragon (Justin Goldstein) and Rebecca Dragon-Freiden (Jonathan Freiden); great-grandfather of Jordana, Alexandra, Jonah, Austin and Danielle; son of Szmuel Henoch Dragon and Hinda nee Kadetsky, who died in the Warsaw Ghetto; brother of Moishe, Yenta, Faiga, and Chaim, all of whom died in the Holocaust; dear friend to many. David was 16 when the Jewish population of Czierps (Sierpc), Poland, was forced by the Nazis to resettle in the Warsaw Ghetto. In an effort to sustain his family, he traveled in and out of the ghetto through the sewers, bringing vegetables and any other goods that he could acquire. Once, stopped by Nazi guards as he was sneaking back in, he believed he was going to be killed, but God had other plans for him. Leaving the ghetto, he was captured and taken to Auschwitz where he endured for 2 ½ years. He wears the tattooed number 78363 on his left forearm as a constant reminder of that bondage. He survived the Death March of January 1945 and was liberated near Munich, Germany in April 1945. In 1948, he, his wife and his infant son emigrated to the US and settled in Chicago. David became a skilled tailor and worked hard to build a new life with his family. He was fluent in Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, and English, easily moving between languages. He was an avid sports fan, who loved the White Sox, Cubs, and the Bears. David was an astute and passionate observer of politics and world events. He loved tennis and enjoyed travel. In later years, he became a speaker at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, where he shared his personal story with school groups. He was a devoted member of Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation, which merged with Congregation Beth Shalom, where he found a comfortable, loving spiritual home. Synagogue service at Congregation Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Avenue, Northbrook. Interment Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights.

Post #200!!! Adeline Kadetsky's Marriage Certificate

The blog's 200th post! I never thought that there would be enough info to post 200 research posts on the Kautsky family history. But here we are. Every time I think that the research has been exhausted, some new database or newspaper is digitalized and new information is there to be discovered.

Here are the images of the marriage certificate of Adeline Kadetsky 20 yo (link to the geni tree) to Joseph Wasserzug (Waters), 39 yo. The marriage certificate is for December 7, 1884. They lived at 80 Henry Street. It was his 2nd marriage and her first marriage. Adeline's parents are listed as Isaac Yishai and Bluma Jacobs. Since they are both patronymic surnames, it seems that Isaac's father's name would be Yishai.

The surnames are a mixture of patronymic surnames and the more updated family surnames. Adeline's maiden name of Kadetsky is not mentioned. Patronymic names include Wolff, Josephs, Yishia, and Jacobs. 

Benjamin Kadetsky Opens Hebrew School and is President of Congregation Ahavath Scholem in Buffalo, NY

Benjamin Kadetsky, brother of Sussman Kadetsky was an active member of the Buffalo Jewish Community. He was a well-known successful businessman, running a tailoring service. He served as president of Congregation Ahavath Scholem and the local Hebrew school.

He was president of the "Shabbat School" as reported by the Buffalo Times on September 3, 1909. The school would serve 400 kids. The curriculum would cover "lectures, history, Hebrew, and English."

The following is found in the google book search from the "Bulletin By American Newspaper Publishers Association" Dated 1904 GLASGOW WOOLEN, MILLS, Buffalo, N. Y. The above is conducted by Benjamin Kadetsky. He is a married man about 46 years old, and has been in business at the present location since December last, at that time succeeding the Isham Taylor Company. On interviewing the above he stated that he is doing a prosperous business and is meeting all obligations promptly. He has two stores in Buffalo and one factory which was his former tailor shop. He also has a store in Akron, Ohio. He declines to give any information further than this. Locally, he is regarded as a man of good reputation and ability.

Friedman Kadetsky AKA Koedskey, Kadet, Fred or Frank

In the 1892 NY Census (3rd Column at the bottom and top of the 4th column)

Fred Koedskey was living in Buffalo, NY. Living with him at the time were Jennie 29 yo, Edna 10 yo, Annie 8 yo, Ben 7 yo, Jac 5 yo, illegible male 3 yo, and Lillie 1yo. Illegible female Kadetsky 29 yo, Moris Berkowise 23 yo. Morris Berkowise Americanized his name to Morris Berk. he is married to Friedman's sister. Pauline Berk. Fred remarried twice, first to Esther Sugar and second to Pauline Feigenbaum. SHe had been previously married to Philip Goldberg. 

The next people listed are Leon Gershon 28 yo, Carl Scheuk 28, Kattie? Scheuk, Carl Scheuk 1 yo, David Fried 28 yo, Rosie Fried 26 yo, Bertie Fried 6 yo, Rose Fried 5 yo, J Fried (male) 3 yo, and Louis Fried 2 yo.

The only thing that brings these families together is the proximity with which they lived to each other and that Fred, Moris, and Leon are tailors and David Fried is a cutter.

Friedman Kadet's death record lists his parents as Israel M. Kadet and Sarah Miriam. His gravestone lists his name as Friedman Kadetsky.

Interestingly Friedman's children, Jack and Rose are not listed on his 1900 United States Federal Census or the 1905 New York State Census but are listed in his obituary.

Jacob Kadetski part 5: Rae Kadetzky Schnieder

Just tying up a loose end on this tree. According to her marriage license, Ray Kadetski (b. 1903, 24 yo) married Philip Schneider (b. 1888, 39 yo) on March 26, 1927, in Cook, Il. The marriage license does not give any indication of whether Philip was married previously.  According to the 1930 and 1940 US Census, Rae and Philip did not have children. In 1930, Rae worked as a tailor and Philip was a mattress maker, which is confirmed by Philip's death certificate. In 1940, Rae's occupation is a "finisher" at a wholesale men's clothing business and Philip is a "mattress filler" for a wholesale mattress business. Kadetsky Mystery: Abraham Kadatsky?!?!

This is Abraham Kadatzky who also lives in Chicago. According to his naturalization, he was born in Kiev. On his naturalization, he lists his sons, Isadore Isak born 1900, Hyman Chaim born 1903 in Kiev, and Joseph born in 1906. 

This Abrama Kadatzky (dob 11/18/1875) of Chicago, lists his nearest relative as Minnie Kadatzky. 

Jacob Kadetski part 4: Grandson Alan Kadets (Harry's son)

In Memoriam: Alan I. Kadet, Rogers & HollandsApril 12, 2017 (2 comments)

Buffalo Grove, IL—Alan I. Kadet, chairman of the board of the Illiniois-based jewelry chain Rogers and Hollands Jewelers, died April 3. He was 91.

Kadet was a decorated WWII veteran, having received a Bronze Medal from the United States Army during his service. After his discharge, he met and married Juell Friedman (shown together in the photo at left), daughter of Bernard Friedman who, together with partner Herbert Goldstone, had founded Rogers Jewelers in 1945. Kadet joined the firm in 1949, rising to president and later, upon Friedman’s retirement in the 1980s, chairman.

In 1979, Rogers Jewelers acquired Hollands Jewelers, a chain of six Chicago-area jewelry stores with stores in prime real estate areas like the city’s famed Water Tower Place. Following the acquisition, the company officially changed its name to Rogers & Hollands Jewelers.

The company expanded through the 1980s and 1990s, adding stores in Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, and Minnesota, and acquiring Armond’s Diamond Centers, an eight-store chain in Illinois and Wisconsin. By the end of 2001, the company had 64 stores in six states, having expanded into Ohio. The company also added the trade name Ashcroft & Oak Jewelers, and throughout the 2000s added new stores under that name in Kentucky, Tennessee, and western Pennsylvania.

Kadet is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juell, the matriarch and former jewelry designer for the chain. She was a leader in the advancement of women in the jewelry industry, as the first woman to be featured on the cover of National Jeweler and the first woman to be inducted into the magazine’s renowned Retailer Hall Of Fame. 

Kadet also is survived by three children: daughters Marla (Michael) Epton and Lori (Craig) Stern, and son Rodger (Katherine) Kadet; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Jacob Kadetski part 3: Jake's son Alexander Kadetsky tragically drowns

Tragically, Jake Kadetski's son Alex died at 18 years old. Alexander Kadetsky appears to be an Americanized name. I am unsure if he is Itzig or Elie who immigrated in 1910 at ages of 17 and 18 respectively or if this is a different son who I have not yet found his immigration manifest. There are no known records for Itzig or Elie aside from their Ellis Island Manifests. In 1913, Itzig would have been 20 and Elie 21, so the ages do not match either of the boys unless Itzig lied about his age to enable him to be old enough for him to travel with his brother. Whatever the case, Alexander's death was tragic. 

The article says that Godie (Godel) Braman was a "cousin," son of Rachael Braman nee Given. Here is the Braman family plot. I think there is something nice about putting the picture of the deceased on the headstone.

Jacob Kadetski part 2: The East Chicago, Indiana Kadetskys

Jacob Kadetski worked as a tailor in East Chicago, Indiana. 5 of his children followed him to America. It does not appear that his wife Tzirel Sarah came to America. Sons Eli (18 yo) and Itzig (17 yo) arrived in Ellis Island on July 3rd, 1910. They last lived with their mother Cirl in Sierpc and were joining their father in East Chicago, Indiana. Hersch Kadeczki arrived on May 14, 1912, to his uncle Juda Weinstein. He last resided with his mother Zirel in Sierpc. He Americanized his name to Harry Kadetski and worked with his father. Sister Rywka arrived at Ellis Island on February 22, 1921, and joined her brother, Harry, in East Chicago. (Kadetsky manifests, Column L, designated as group "F.")

Arrives from Russia

Journeying all the way from Russia, Poland, Miss. Ray Kadetski just arrived in East Chicago to remain with her parents, the J. Kadetsky family and her brother, Harry Kadetski, haberdasher in Chicago Avenue. The young lady had sought for passage to this country before the war, but could not gain it and she is happy here now in being reunited with her kinspeople.

Jacob Kadetski part 1: Jake Kadetski son of Jacob Kadetski?!?!

Some records are just unbelievable.  Here is an example of a "huh?" moment: Jake Kadetski son of Jacob Kadetski?!?!

Naming customs vary for Ashkenazi vs Sephardic Jews. Sephardic Jews name after the living while Ashkenazi Jews do not name after living people. There is a joke about the parents of the couple getting married. The groom's family is Ashkenazi and the bride's family is Sephardic. The families are attempting to resolve a conflict that made tempers flare. As a token of peace, the Sephardic father offers that Ashkenazi father, that the firstborn son should be named after the Ashkenazi father.  The Ashkenazi father is severely insulted and storms off. The Sephardic father is befuddled that the Ashkenazi father is so angered by the offering of this prestigious honor. Meanwhile, the Ashkenazi father, understands that the Sephardic in law has just wished him to die....

Regarding Jake and his father Jacob, this is a case of an immigrant Americanizing his name. (Click here for the geni tree, I'll explain how this branch was created over the next several posts) Jake's ship manifest records his name as Itzchok Kadecky who immigrated on July 29, 1903. (see Kadetsky Manifest list line 16). He stayed with his brother-in-law, Albert Given. (Albert Given was a wealthy department store owner.)

In 1910 we find Jake Kadetski listed as a servant for the Givens. He lists his immigration as 1906. Since he was not the head of the household, he is unlikely to be the source of the information. 

In the 1920 Census, Jake Kadetski is living on his own and lists his immigration year as 1901. He owned his own tailoring shop.

Isaac Kadetsky was a Big Time Trouble Maker Part III

Isaac Kadetsky who was born in 1880 and lived in Boston got into serious mischief! 

In 1888 and 1892 he found himself as the center of trouble. 

This article comes from the front page of the Boston Globe Monday, April 12, 1897. Isaac would have been 17 years old and was among the older boys involved in the card "playing ring." This time the trouble-making was playing poker and smoking cheap cigars. I find the descriptions of policing, the stakeout, and the takedown from the 1890s to be entertaining. Unbelievable that a Police Officer's nickname was "Big Rufe," who was a "Gigantic Sergeant." I wonder who "jollied de old man and were goin' to just have a little game -ace?"

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky Part 2

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's headstone and death certificate have 2 dates of death. The death certificate shows her death on March 21, 1910, while her headstone has February 22, 1910. It appears whoever commissioned the headstone had the wrong English date. 

An additional complication is that 1910 was a Jewish leap year. Since 1910 was a Jewish leap year, there were 2 months of Adar, 1 & 2. So the correct Yahrzeit for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky is March 21, 1910 is the 10th of Adar 2. 

 In the 1900 US Census (see below), she is living with her daughter Adaline Hymuth. She was born in 1832. She had 6 children, 2 of whom were still alive. She is listed as married for 50 years. She arrived in 1880. 

Two more pieces of the puzzle for Bluma Rosa Kadetsky: There is a death record in Beizun for Szmul Kadecki in 1853, listing his widow as Bluma Roza Kadecki.

Isaac was born the following year. It is highly likely that Bluma Roza Kadecki married a second time. It is very common in those times for a brother to marry his brother's widow. Perhaps Bluma Roza married Yitzchak Hoshua and had Abraham Joseph Kadetsky and Adeline Kadetsky. 

Additionally, in the 1910 US Census Adeline Hymoff (Waters), nee Kadetsky lived at 191 Magnolia St., next door to Bluma Rosa Kadetsky. Living next door to her elderly, 82 year old, mother would make a lot of sense (as documented on Bluma Rosa Kadetsky's death certificate. see previous post).

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky; Mother of Isaac, Adeline and Abraham Joseph Kadetsky?

Bluma Rosa Kadetsky died in Boston Massachusetts in 1910. Her headstone's inscription is very informative. Her headstone indicates that she had multiple children! Her headstone inscription is "Eemeynu" which translates as "Our Mother." If she only had one child the inscription would have been "Eemee" which means "My Mother." 

On her death certificate, her husband's name is Samuel Kadetsky. Her parents are listed as Jacob Jackson and Adeline Levy. I am unsure exactly who her children are. 

There are two Boston Kadetsky branches that are possibly her children:

1. Most likely is Isaac Kadetsky (1854-1891) whose parents on his death certificate are Samuel Kadetsky and Rosa Abrahams. 
2. Another intriguing option is Adeline Waters Hymoff nee Kadetsky. Adeline's death certificate show her parents are listed as Blumie Jackson and Isaac Kadetsky. On Adeline's headstone, her father is listed as Yitzchak Yehoshua. If Bluma Rosa Kadetsky was Adeline's mother, then Adeline would then be named for her maternal grandmother. Adeline's brother, Abraham Joseph Kadetsky's death records do not record his mother's name. 

In the 1880 US Census, Abraham Joseph Kadeska and Isac Kadezky are neighbors. A Kadezka (20 yo) was married to Shifla (21 yo). Living with him was his brother-in-law, J. Kaufman. Next door was Isac Kadezky (29 yo) with his wife Dora (21 yo) and son Samuel (10/1879).

"Our precious mother, Bluma Rosa daughter of Jacob, died 13 of Adar (I) 5670, may her soul be bound up with life. Beloved mother, Blume R. Kadetsky died Feb 22, 1910.

Lillian Kadetsky Brown

 As mentioned in the previous post Lillian Kadestky (b. 1892) married Isadore Brown (b. 1894). The is the second Brown Kadetsky marriage, as Sussman Kadetsky married Augusta Braun. Lillian's parents are transcribed as Jake and Celia Kadetsky and Isadore's parents are Morris and Eva Brown. They married on November 9, 1914. 

By the 1920 US Census, they had moved to Chicago. Sussman Kadetsky had brothers in Chicago as well. Isadore (b. 1885?, nat. 1905) and Lilly Brown (b. 1893, nat. 1905) had Morris (b. 1915), Freida (b. 1917) and Francis (b. 1918).  Isadore worked as a Tailor. They lived at 726 Paulina Street, Chicago, Il. 

In 1930 they had moved to 1266 South St. Louis Street in Chicago. Isadore was b. 1890 im. 1905 and Lillian was b. 1894, im, 1909. Children; Morris 14 yo, Freida 13 yo , Francis 11 yo and Jenny 9 yo.

In 1940 they loved at 1630 Lawrence Ave in Chicago. Isadore is 55 yo (b. 1885), Lillian is 40 (b.1900). Children: Frieda (b. 1919), Francis (b. 1920), and Jean (b. 1922).
