This article comes from the front page of the Boston Globe Monday, April 12,
1897. Isaac would have been 17 years old and was among the older boys involved
in the card "playing ring." This time the trouble-making was playing poker and
smoking cheap cigars. I find the descriptions of policing, the stakeout, and the
takedown from the 1890s to be entertaining. Unbelievable that a Police
Officer's nickname was "Big Rufe," who was a "Gigantic Sergeant." I wonder who "jollied de old man and were
goin' to just have a little game -ace?"
